I have 2 Petes, neither of which is a P-lip. The idea of the P sounds like a good one, but I see a lot of guys talk down about it, so from your experience what are the pros and cons? Who likes it and why? Who doesn't like it and why? I don't want to spend the money on the unknown without the practical research of the forum clan!

I like the p-lip. I have heard some complaints about getting a burning sensation on the top of your mouth, but I have never had this problem. I have also heard that it is uncomfortable in your mouth, but again that is not my experience. The reason I like it is that it directs smoke away from your tongue so you avoid tongue bit. If everything is optimal with your smoking technique and your tobacco this shouldn't be a problem, but this is not always the case. Especially when trying new tobacco or find some old stuff you forgot about. You really kind of have to try it for yourself and if you don't like I am sure you can find someone on here to trade with you. :puffpipe:

Put me down in the don't like the P-Lip camp. I find it awkward to hold in my mouth, and the smoke goes straight up onto the roof of my mouth making it more likely to get burned.

I've got 1 p-lip and I like it. It does take a little while to get used too and I can see why if your a clencher you wouldn't like it but it works for me.

I'd say if you haven't got one then give it a go. If you really hate it then I'm sure someone would swap for a non plip

I like the P-lip, seems to have a smaller bite surface to me, so they are more comfortable to clench than a typical stem. might be my teeth, lol, but they fit just right. 3 of my Pete's have the P-lip.

Must be the way I hold a pipe in my teeth because some love them, like rigmedic, but I seem to prefer a thin bit and I hold it with my back teeth.

They have been about for over 100 years so some thing must be right about them, clenching them on a straight is not easy but dangling not clenching them on a bent is easy, I do find that they help keeping tongue bite in order,I enjoy all my pipes but my Petersons which all are P-Lips are my favorite smokers.

I've been contemplating this as well...and have had reservations for the same reason. I did read somewhere that many prefer Savinelli's "dry" system to the Peterson?!? Hhmm....

I love my Peterson p-lip pipes. They're a lot easier for me to clench (I clench by my incisors (sp) ) and I love the draw being up toward the roof of the mouth. Doesn't irritate my gums nearly as much. They seem to give a little bit smoother of a smoke than the fishtails for me. As stated before though, it's a love hate relationship with pipers and the p-lip.

I like my p-lip also and I'm a clencher. I have a Kinsale XL20. It's a large bowl and it actually hangs very comfortably. I also have bit cushions on all of my stems, this one included. The softy bit enables a very comfortable and secure hold on all pipes and most especially on the p-lip. My future Peterson purchases will all be P-Lips and I am looking forward to several more. I have purchased a new Savinelli and a new Stanwell in the recent past, both good pipes around a hundred dollars each but I find that Peterson's are far superior in quality and finish. To my way of thinking, an absolutely true Pete should be acquired with the trademark P-lip stem. A Pete with a fishtail stem is just another good pipe. I've also noted brother's comments regarding roof of mouth irritation which I have not experienced. I suspect that draw technique may have some bearing. I regularly pack my large Kinsale bowl with Penzance for a smoke that approaches two hours clenching throughout. Never had any irritation problems.

Not my favorite (I like the traditional bit for its width whereas p-lips are more narrow.)
Incredibly personal choice. Try one and if you don;t like it, you'll recover most of the cost in a sale or trade.

The p-lip is good for taming stronger tobaccos and for preventing tongue bite. There is also a p-lip type mouthpiece with the air-hole in the center (not top) which causes tongue bite more than a standard bit
