Hi! i am just a newbie in pipe smoking. I just want to know what is the effect if the tobacco is to dry, and what if it is too humid? I just store my tobacco in a pouch, and I put the pouch in a jar. Actually it is summer here in the Philippines, and i store the jar in room temperature. I tried to smoke and I got a tongue bite. I was thinking if it is the effect of too dry tobacco. By the way I am smoking Dingler 1904....

Tongue bite can be from a number of different things...smoking to fast/hot, the tobacco itself may have a bite itself, packing too tight or to loose, etc. It is common practice to dry moist tobacco out a bit before smoking it, about 15-30 min. Dry tobacco can cause a bite because it will burn too fast/ hot. Best thing to do brother is play with the tobacco packing a little to find whats comfortable for you.

Pipe tobacco moisture is a thing of personal preference. I smoke all my favorite tobaccos on the crispy side because I like a dry smoke. Dry tobacco agrees with me better and tastes better to my palate. Some people like a more moist tobacco. Experiment with different humidities and see what works for you. Just know that tobacco that is too moist can possibly cause your pipe to become overly hot and may leave a lot of gunky liquid in the bottom of the bowl. Then again, overly dry tobacco can burn too hot as well. Hope this helps!

How many times do I have to experience tongue bite before I find the tobacco, and moist/dryness that is for me?

Bite has a bit to do with body chemistry, too. I'd maybe get a sampler from one of the Online Retailers that contain several blends, like VA's, VA/Pers, Burleys and a Lat Blend and find which one suits you the best. Then you can head in that direction with bigger purchases. I really don't get bit, but I have had mouth/tongue burn, but mainly it was because I was smoking too fast. Packing better, smoking slower ant tamping lighter will go miles to help that problem.

@peterpiper11 Welcome to the forum.
Dingler 1904 is a Burley Tobacco.
If you have tried it moist and dry with different packing methods and you are smoking slowly, it may be possible that you do not tolerate burley tobacco well. Some people don't.
It might be worth trying a different type of tobacco. Or you might also try mixing a little perique tobacco with it to make a mix with 5% perique. I have heard that really helps cutting the bite from Virginias, which also bite some people.
I hope this helps.

Don't give up. Let us know when you find what works for you. It may also help others.

Good luck.

There are only three (as far as I know) brands of pipe tobacco here in the Philippines, Borkum Riff, Dingler 1904 and MacBaren...I bought Dingler 1904 since it was the cheapest...then I tried Borkum Riff since according to the saleslady in the store where I buy it has the highest sales, meaning almost everybody likes it, esp.the cherry flavor...I am now thinking to try MacBaren but i am afraid I would experience the same with this brand and will not really enjoy pipe smoking...I even start thinking that pipe smoking is not for me.
