tips for smoking a 4th gen Stokkebye 1957

Hey guys,
Ive been having difficulties in smoking a 4th gen Stokkebye 1957
i've tried different types of tobacco, but without much success compared to my other pipes. I don't want to set it aside as a bum pipe, so I'm looking for some tips to get her to be a good smoking pipe

Hi Todd, I haven't a clue what a 4th gen Stokkebye 1957 looks like but if it is failing you with all kinds of tobacco perhaps the pipe isn't 'breathing' right?
By that I mean might there be some obstruction in the airway of the pipe or stem? Will it pass a pipecleaner with ease?
There could be many reasons why it isn't working for you but those are the first I would check out.

What problems are you having?

Bad draw?

How many bowls have you smoked?

Many of my pipes have needed dozens of bowls to settle in.
I'm my experience, I've typically had to play around with the packing firmness and sometimes the style of tobacco, to see what works best with some finicky pipes.

High guys and thanks for your help!
I can pass a pipe cleaner thru it all the way into the bowl, no problem, which come out no more wet nor dirty than any of my other pipes do.
Drawing smoke under "normal" pipe conditions the smoke is too light.
In order to get a "normal" amount of smoke to come thru I must either hold a lighter to it, OR i have to smoke the pipe very hot! the bowl is not so hot that I can't hold it around the bowl, but it must be much much hotter than any of my other pipes. Fortunately the bowl is VERY thick so I'm not too worried about cracking it.
So far I've been smoking tobaccos like Frog Mortons (my favorite). Gas Light and Irish Flake, no way! Next I'll try a ribbon cut Gawith Hoggargth Kendal Kentucky and see...

Perhaps opening up the draught hole might help. However hold back on that idea until you get more suggestions from more experienced pipers as once done it cannot be undone.

Ok Jay, will do.
Just out of curiosity, how would I do that with a curved stem and a little bit curved shank?
Any other types of tobacco cuts you would suggest?

Is there an air leak? If you put your hand over the bowl, can you draw air through and create suction?

Seems to smoke better with the ribbon cut and only 1/2 to maybe 2/3 bowl
If moe tobacco then I have to burn it hot

I have the same pipe, more or less. My 1957 has the mocha sandblast finish. Unlike my other Jeppesen pipes, this one didn't seem to really pop with any tobacco I put in it, until one night at a pipe club meeting, I packed it hard with some Squadron leader. I packed it down really hard in the bowl so it wouldn't spill while I was driving, and promptly forgot about it in my pipe bag for about 90 minutes. When I did remember it and lit it, it was one of the more sublime smokes I think I ever had. A caveat, however: I have never been able to duplicate that smoke. Lord knows I have tried.

Since I did that, though, the pipe has been a good Latakia pipe. It never was very good with the VaPers or Virginias, but still is good with Lats and Orientals.

I don't know anything about your pipe, but I will say that the web site seems to be the most worthless one I have ever seen. Well, maybe not THE most worthless, I have been online a long time.
Try to find a store near you. I can't find one anywhere in the US, let alone Indiana. I think its broke...
Nice looking pipe though.
