Tips for Making a Clay Pipe Please?

I wanna make a clay pipe similar to a Vermont freehand tabbaco pipes and tips?

get clay try and try until you get something you're happy with. Talk to your local crafts people that teach pottery and they should be able to help. Oh and you'll need a metal wire something like stainless steel is good to keep the draft open. youtube has videos of pros making them. Seems pretty easy actually if you have the kiln.

Ok thanks but do you know which type of clay is best for this? Can normal modelling/sculpting clay be used?

not sure, the people who I've known who did it just used whatever clay they had easy access to.

Though I'm not an art major I have used modelling clay and traditional clay and I can say almost certainly not. Modelling clay is meant for kids to make figures out of like play-dough then become "hard" simply by air drying... tobacco pipes are made from more traditional types of wet clays that need to be kiln-fired to set. Modelling clay is extremely light weight, brittle, and not meant to be set on fire lol... plus it contains other chemicals and fillers in order to make it set by air (like talc and PVC) which are known carcinogens when ingested/inhaled

How about sculpting clay used by professional sculpting clay such as a oil based clay that dosent dry out like water based clay and requires heating to harden it such as putting it in a klin or oven?

I'd look more into its ingredients (like I said, I'm no art major/professional clay worker haha) I just know that modelling clay is different so, yeah in general that sounds like it would be more akin to what the retail clay pipes are made of... I just know that they are kiln fired, not air dried

I sure will post them when I end making them gotta do some more research. also in a few days I'm going to post a new wooden smoking pipe that I'm currently making right know so make sure to be tuned in
