Right now I'm experimenting with just the bulk tobacco at my local shop. There tin selection seems very limited and very expensive. They all have numbers like 471,451,27 in the jars. Wats the differents and where is a good online store to purchase tins?

Welcome to the forum, tblanco.
The site sponsors are listed somewhere on the left side of the page.

You may have to scrol down. That's a good place to start.

Welcome,Tblanco,to the forum.
I would guess the bulks you are smoking are probably Lane Ltd blends. Ask your tobacconist about this.
There are lots of other companies that sell their blends in bulk. There are other companies that do not. Explore.
And remember, even in tins, pipe tobacco is a lot cheaper than cigs or cigars. $10 for 50 grams is a lot of smoking.

Welcome to the forum. The three best places to order tobacco on line in my opinion are smokingpipes, P&C and 4 noggins. All three are site sponsors. I do not recommend cup of joes, no free shipping and their prices are not very good. Most of my favorites only come in tins unfortunately but compared to cigarettes and cigars, it is still incredibly cheap.

What rothnh said... McCrannies, Tewksbury, IR and Just For Him are four that I have purchased from on a regular basis. All four have some fantastic blends

As usual roth makes a great suggestion, there are many other great tobacconists out there. Some of Peretti's blends are legendary as they have been in business for well over a hundred years. As a kid I used to go there with my dad. I need to check them out, thanks for the reminder Roth.

Probably Lane Limited or Altadis blend numbers. Although Cornell & Diehl, a most excellent blender, has quite a lot of bulk tobacco's with a number (see here for instance) Most tobacconists will give them store names, but ultimately they all are the same. Meaning Cornell and Diehl 451 (Gray Ghost) will be the same in every tobacconist. A good tobacconist will have no objections to actually tell you the name of the blend and blender, which will help you to discover which ones you really like. Just as an example: McClelland has a blend with number 910 (Kentucky Cavendish), but so does Cornell and Diehl (Maple Cavendish). So it's worth asking which 910 he has.
Wats the differents
(sic)

The differences between the blends/numbers or the difference between bulk & tin ? If the first, well it will depend on the blend of which tobaccos and which blender. The differences are just legio in flavor, strength, aromatics, etc. Between bulk and tin, some swear by tin, some swear by bulk. I'd say experiment and see where you land. Personally I have both because there are certain blends I like that come in tin only.
and where is a good online store to purchase tins?

Philip and the other gave you a good list to start with there.
Good luck !

I usually do most of my tobacco orders through smokingpipes.com . They seem to have the best prices. As for bulk vs. tins my advice is if there's a tin that entices you see if it's in bulk first. If it is you can usually get a sampler of 2oz or so for under $5 making it cheaper to give blends a try and if you really enjoy it you can stock up on a pound or so. Store it in a mason jar in a darker cool place, like a cellar, and it'll keep for a long time. Another thing to mention is, if you find a blend you like in bulk that has a tin you like you can always bulk order it and then order a tin to carry it around in and show off the artwork.

+1 on the smokingpipes.com bulk. The ability to buy an ounce to try is fantastic. Definitely try the Lane 1Q.

I would suggest buying a tin or a sample to start with and when you have found your winners, you can always stock up on bulk :puffpipe:

I quit buying tins from my local tobacconist when I discovered I could by a 100g tin for what he was charging for a 50g tin.

I have purchased tobacco from Just For Him, Smokingpipes.com, 4 Noggins, Cup o' Joes, Boswells (bulk only) and Mars so far and have been satisfied with all of these online retailers.
