I visit the local Tinder Box once or twice a month. A couple of months ago I stopped in to pick up some Wilshire (Lane 1Q) for my son-in-law. I always rummage through the basket pipes and one pipe caught my eye and peaked my interest...which seldom happens with the basket pipes. I liked the way it looked, I liked the color of the stem, it felt good, a pipe cleaner ran through it easily and I didn't have one similar in my rotation. I bought it for $30. I have smoked this pipe at least a dozen times and I really like it...a lot!
Here's the questions. Is this a Rhodesian due to the round shank? Has anyone else purchased a basket pipe that they really enjoyed smoking?

Very nice looking pipe!

Maybe not a basket pipe per se, but I got my birth year Brigham in a lot of pipes I bought through local classifieds. It has a beautiful small bowl and a great 'pine cone' rustication. It is one of my favorite pipes, and I probably paid $4 or $5 CDN for it all told.

Here
I bought an "online" basket pipe from P&C when I first started.
Behold, the generic German #26. I love the shape. The top of the button is too small, hard to get the perfect clench.
Some day, I hope to send it off and have a nice stem fitted to it. Kind of like putting $2000 rims on a $1000 car, as the kids like to do. :crazy:

Yes, I have a Tinder Box basket pipe no-name briar that smokes great. I use it in my rotation all the time. Nice draw and cleans up nicely. Not as nice looking as yours but it performs well.

What ends up in the basket is determined by management. Some places just peddle off-brand cheapies with soft plastic stems, hoping to sell to beginners. Others use the basket to sell many pipes that have just stayed on the pipe wall too long, sometimes good name-brand briars. So do a lot of shopping and learn the brands, the materials, and quality points to look for, and evaluate what's offered. At some shops, there are good pipes in the basket.

@peck, Thanks.
@mso, I look in the basket every time I walk through the door. Sometimes there may be 5 pipes, other times there may be 20 pipes. The day I found this pipe the basket was full.

Yes; I have about a dozen pipes bought from baskets that I like. Ten of them got 50 years ago, and two in the last few years. Both the latter are Parkers, and one from London and one got in Edinburgh. IIRC, most shops had them long ago, and few do now.

I was buying basket pipes when I first started. I haven't bought a basket pipe in about 8 years though. I probably won't buy basket pipes again though, cause I like the collection I have now and I'm working on trading in my entry level pipes for higher grades just because that's what I'm into.

jpmcwjr, the IRC supreme bulldog I have was bought off the Bay years ago and is a mighty fine pipe with birdseye. 1 of my favorite dogs. I have 2 other no names in the rotation with 1 bought off the Bay and 1 in a B&M, though don't know if those 2 ever resided in a basket. Great pipes.
