I can't say my folks didn't give me the opportunity. I had piano lessons that didn't last. I played violin with lessons and in a youth orchestra, but was hugely relieved after several years when I broke my wrist and got to quit. However, I did pick up a plastic pan flute, and immediately a harmonica and taught myself to play everything from hymns, anthems, a few strains of Bach, and other standards. Despite being something of a blues fan, I just can't to that. I'm still trying ... to teach myself cornet, but can't master the scale on the valves, and also do mildly successful descant to string band records on the slide whistle, and a few recorder tunes. I think we could say I'm a guy who plays old tunes on the harmonica and otherwise a failed musician. I sometimes feel I spent most of my youth finding out the vast array of things for which I have no aptitude. I'm so glad there were a few things I did anyway.
