This must be strange, but I do it a lot now: I smoke three pipes during a sitting, not finishing any one bowl. Then, the next day, I take up where I left off on each bowl. My current three-course meal is: 1. Old Ironsides 2. Windjammer 3. Smoker's Pride Vanilla (for desert). Anyone else do this? Best to all.

This is interesting, I've never tried it. Do you find the blends make a difference? I find that if I forget to clean the dottle out of my finished bowls for a day or 3 some blends become especially acrid smelling.

There are even times where I'd mean to come back to half a bowl but couldn't stomach the change in flavor... almost as bad as coming back to an old half-smoked cigar.

The only time I had trouble coming back to a bowl was with Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired - tasted like dirt. I do think the blends make a difference. Old Ironsides, for example, is the steak for me. Windjammer, the delicious side dish. And of course the vanilla (which I smoke in a huge Brog Lumberjack), producing billows of flavor.

I've never done it on purpose, and never more than one bowl like you. I don't like finishing bowls in one sitting. Just doesn't feel right.

I have smoked two in comparison. It allows you to taste each more acutely.

More often then not I “parfait” my tobacco. I’ll put Granger in the bottom 2/3 and top off the pipe with another blend that I wish to sample. If I don’t care for the new blend, no harm. I smoke it until the Granger takes over.

I suppose your could do a three course parfait of a single pipe? Why not? Enjoy yourself.

I usually smoke 2 bowls, one after another. Sometimes three.
I always finish each bowl, before going onto the next.
Very occasionally a bowl doesn't do it for me, in which case it gets dumped.

I don't like leaving dottle or unsmoked tobacco in a pipe. I like to clean each pipe after a smoke, then they get placed back with the rest.

What you're describing is partially eating a perfectly good 3 course meal and going back to finish it the next day. I hate leftovers (generally), so it ain't gonna happen. Just saying.

But heh, to each his own, and if that suits you, why not. ;)

I frequently don't finish a bowl, and find the resumption an hour or day or more later anywhere from satisfactory to superb. I believe the biggest factor besides the blend is dry bowls work a treat but moist ones are prone to getting funky.
