Must be the shape (or the existence of a stem). I just had a similar desire to own a 100+ year old pipe and picked up the little guy below
1912 AJI Bent Billiard
I only paid $10 but I'll probably pay a bit more to fluff it up and add a replacement stem....but it won't be close to $317.

Was hoping that one would slip by unnoticed. Um, it didn't Cool, unusual pipe, especially if you like princes.

No doubt Wes, I was hoping the same thing, but I wasn't really enthralled with it anyway because of the boring smooth finish
I was however hopelessly enthralled a few months back when I saw one of my Grail pipes pop up, heart a'thumping it was, it was --- and I wasn't even put off by the tatty condition at all...
...dude, I can fix it, I have an ultimate set of tools!

...well, I can't really fix it LOL  It most definitely needs professional help, just as much as me!

But I'm happy to have it and look forward to when I finally send the damn thing off to be restored, there were other bidders on it and I ended up paying $78, it's obviously missing it's silver mount which is quite depressing and it has some weird pinkish stuff that I suspect is putty or something, but hey, don't laugh, it's paid for, and it's all mine! :P

I strongly suspect it was made in 1920, the only other 2 examples I've seen with silver mounts intact have been from 1920...note all 3 examples lack the brass O stem logo, that was another concern of mine when I first saw it, that the stwm was a replacement, but it's complete with the scoop...

Something about the silver army mount prince just looks so right and I really do like them.
This Barling is in the collection of Chris Asteriou...

Great Looking pipes there!

I too have been on the hunt for an army mount prince..... something about that shape really yanks me chain......... :D

I'm a huge lover of the blasts, 80 % of my pipes are blasts,.........BUT---- I gotta say this shape, for me anyways, is much more endearing in a smooth finish. I really don't know why............

I'd love to see what George D could do with that Dugout.
Indeed, that's what I was thinking too guys.

I have to agree,

I surely wouldn't turn down a date with that Barling,

I'd ask her to marry me!

Of the examples pictured in this thread,

I think the Loewe is the most elegant specimen.
Something about it just seems *perfect*.

IDK-- They are both superb.....

It seems that the smooth version is a minority in this realm?

I still favor that Barling...........woody material, that.............
