It's truly amazing sometimes to see the lengths the Smoke Nazis will go to in their crusade to deprive us of our freedom:
http://www.smokersclubinc.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=5188
You've gotta love this: "The first problem is that no study was carried out – a phone survey was done asking if people thought third hand smoke was a health hazard – and used the results to determine that it is. It does not matter one iota to the ‘researchers’ that they have no evidence whatsoever – no study, no scientific material, nothing to back up their claim that third hand smoke is dangerous."
There's nothing like hard facts and scientific evidence to back up your claims.
I think I'm going to apply for some of the grant money that the government is offering and start calling Smoke Nazis at dinner time to ask if they think sixth-hand smoke is dangerous.

Wait...third hand? Wha-wha-what? My father is a critical pulmonologist, and I'm going to see if he's heard anything at all about this ridiculous bull.
Of course, he stands strong with smokers that 2nd hand smoke isn't deadly...he smoked cigars all through my childhood.

If there is such a thing as third hand smoking, does this mean that because I smoke, someone I will NOT be meeting tomorrow, might die of a smoking related disease???

I have a sign at work that says "The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has limits."

Give them more press and I am sure they will show you just how ridiculous they can get.

My Gran had the perfect description of people like that talking . Ducks farting under water.

I submit the "inventors" of third hand smoke are hazardous drivers.

How is possible for them to see, when they have their head up their @$$?

Nearly two years ago, a local hospital went "no smoking" on their campus. Not only did they tear down their (unheated) "smoking shack" that was used by visitors and staff, they prohibited smoking IN PRIVATE CARS parked in the hospital parking lot!
Wait, it gets better:
Now, hospital employees who are found to reek of third-hand smoke will be asked to go home and change clothes (and presumably shower) in order to avoid insulting discerning noses!
I never found out who their "commissar" was in charge of smelling people.
So, third-hand smoke is not a new concept, just another stupid one.
With the hospitals resources, one would thing they could afford to build or designate a portion as a smoking lounge for visitors, staff and patients who smoke. But accomodation doesn't seem to be on this outfit's agenda.

You need to realize that for most of these people, their concerns over second or third or thirteenth hand smoke is based on belief. It is difficult to counter belief with fact. Anti-third hand smoke, anti-muslim. anti-christian, anti-jew, anti-gay, anti-conservative, anti-liberal. It's all based on a set of beliefs. I believe it, therefore it's true. No deep search for fact, just simple surface explanations for complex issues. This happens when one listens only to those who espouse the things one chooses to believe. This is what most people seem to want because simple is easy and it makes them feel they are right, even in the face of fact.
Anti smoking has become, in my view, something of a religion for many if not most people these days. Religion is by definition a belief. Therefore we fight belief in our effort to maintain some personal liberty as regards smoking. It's an uphill battle. Before the prohibition of alcohol, some people truly believed that any alcohol use was evil (religion based) and would eventually kill you. They pointed to those who abused it as examples of how bad it was. They didn't show those who used alcohol in moderation (the majority) and who lived happy, healthy and long lives. The same is done today with tobacco. The antis point to those with three pack a day cigaret habits and say it's the same as using any other tobacco product in any amount. Nonsense of course, but it's nonsense that's easy to sell because important people, people who are respected and have a bully pulpit buy into the hysteria too.
I once heard a man from another country say, "You Americans don't smoke anymore, you take only healthy food and drink and you exercise on treadmills like hamsters. You all live long, healthy, uninteresting lives" Perhaps a bit of an overstatement, but the point was made. It's about what you choose, not what others choose for you that makes it interesting. We must do what we can to keep people from prohibiting something that adds quality to our lives and does not infringe upon theirs. The problem for us is that politicians want and need easy answers too. These are the people who pass the laws based on belief instead of fact because if the voters believe it's true, who are they to say otherwise? Who would want to throw away votes on such a trivial thing as tobacco use? What politicians stood against the prohibition of alcohol? Who wanted to go against the beliefs of the voters then? That political mindset has not and will not change.
So enjoy it while you can, continue to make political waves and maybe someday someone will really listen and logical heads will prevail.

Wow, thanks for turning me on to Steve Milloy, Craig.
I just sent him an email about re-publishing that post, plus a possible interview and guest article here. This guy is awesome.

I live in the middle of the Reading Prong (world's largest uranium deposit) which runs from the middle of Pennsylvania to Boston. The radon gas from this is supposed to be as dangerous as smoking 3 packs of cigarettes every day. I have never seen a COD listed in the obits as radon let alone second or third hand smoke.

I suppose I'm doomed one way or another so I may as well enjoy my time here my way. Pack it, light it, smoke it and forget about it.
