Yesterday, I was driving alone (without my spouse although I believe she monitors my comings and goings via location services) on the New Jersey Turnpike and I was about to pass this tractor trailer which caught my eye as it had some hot pink semi-religious graphics on it. I was surprised and delight to see a foxy lady driving it and some long dormant instinct sprung into action and I quickly rolled down the window to do that yanking motion with my arm to indicate I wanted to hear her honk me. I hope no one here takes that as something like sexual harassment and stalking. Well, I cannot say if she didn't see me or maybe that gesture is not in use anymore as I have not seen it performed on the highway or TV in a long time, but she did not honk me. I felt a little bit rejected, and while I generally don't speed, I pumped the accelerator and pushed my 2012 Scion xB to 71mph to get out of sight. Well, I am wondering now as I enjoy some nice Assam tea and a bowl of that limited blend Long Haul Burley that was made for Iron Skillet a few years back, if kids even do the honk salute anymore? Is getting honked for pleasure no longer practiced?

Feel free to share your own observations about small tokens of American cultural habits that seem to have disappeared.

I wish you all well and would offer you all a double fist honk as I sit here in my Scion but the horn seems to be on the fritz, as it whimpers and wheezes more than it honks, it reminds me of that that line in that poem which I read once: "the world doesn't end with a honk but with a whimper".

This article from a few years ago seems to suggest the "Trucker Salute" is fading away.

I knew it must of not just been my observations as I drive on the New Jersey Turnpike and always in the truck lane weekly.

Do people still play that game where you get points by being the first one to hit the car celling with your hand when you see a car with a headlight out? I forget the name for that activity. I once had a high score of 68 when driving alone from Miami to NYC only stopping for gas.

RE: getting truckers to honk: 60 years ago in the Midwest, it was pretty much limited to kids getting the responses. I guess today, more so- or less-, depending on how you look at it!

I think the problem stems from our failure to teach our children how to issue the the "pumping" signal to the truck drivers. Many of the truckers I talk to complain of this phenomenon.

Another thing people don't do anymore is leave vacation notes for the milkman to suspend service.

I have fond memories of our galvanized milk box as a kid in the 80s. I am guessing most home milk delivery stopped sometimes in the 90s, at least in the North East. My girlfriend grew up in France and most small towns would have supped-up trucks come around selling dairy products from local farms or baked goods. If I remember correctly the milk our man delivered was basically just the supermarket sort.
