I happened upon the below advert but in some pictures I'm struggling to actually see the damned thing

Maybe he wanted to be artistic. Darkened room, a nice pipe, ashtray and different angles. Only tobacco, lighter and scotch is missing.

I love it when the seller says "see pictures for description", and then the photos look like that! Do they see these photos differently than anybody else? This happens all too often, dark, grainy or blurry photos, and unless it's something I'm really interested in enough to ask a few questions, I just pass on the whole thing.

"Worst pictures" is unfortunately a big crowd.
This one was listed, with sterling referenced, but no detail. I asked for details on the nomenclature and he added two fuzzy (aka useless) pix... frustrating, particularly since any modern cell phone camera takes brilliant close-up shots. I told him some detail was needed to get his asking price, not surprisingly, no one had bid on this one.

Al's linked photo is the first I've noticed where nothing is in focus. The opening frame of that pipe is mostly in focus, but lighting way off:

Is it one on those pictures that if you stare at it long enough you will see something?

That one isn't near the worst I've seen. I've seen them where the pipe is just a blur, not the whole pipe, clearly the wrong pipe, all kinds of bad pics!

I'm wondering if there'd be interest in putting together a how-to post on photography. We have a number of photogs on the board, seek input, then write up a short blurb on it.

I've counseled more than a few sellers over the years on the importance of good photographs for their eBay listings. There's nothing more important.
But I'm also grateful to the clueless as I've made some of my best scores from ineptly photographed pipes, including my first Barling quaint, a beautiful 7" long giant pot that I bought for $89.
