I guess a collection of unsmoked pipes is a sort of perfection, like un-driven new cars or unused folding knives. But these seem like items of limited interest to me. I can marvel for about fifteen minutes or less, and then my mind wanders. Whereas use of items marks them with history and imparts a resonance of life lived.

Precisely!

so people who don't smoke dream of hitting up that pipe instead of one properly broken in. ;)
Those are the "woulda, coulda, shoulda, maybe someday" folks. Their life their choice. But if just once; they bite the bit (ouch) and light the lite 'til it's lit, they will discover a treasure of pleasure to enjoy for a lifetime. Doing it trumps a thousand "maybe later's."

At first I thought it was like a straight line haiku, but now I am starting to think there's some secret Masonic key in here that opens a secret compartment in a desk somewhere.

Although Matsuo Basho died in Osaka on November 28, 1694, he would have thought the same thing; but you said it with a higher degree of intellect, passion
and are amenable to otherworldly secret compartments... somewhere. You're right and there are!

I have a few unsmoked pipes in my old British-wood collection that will continue to stay that way. There aren’t many old 70 to 100 year old unsmoked pipes. There are thousands that are.

I've a few pipes with acrylic stems that I bought solely to look at because I can't stand the feel of most of them. This Preben Holm Hallmark was purchased for me by my wife unsmoked and will remain that way. It arrived in its original box and hand signed sock and appears on his Pipedia page.

I have a number of pipes that are unsmoked for various reasons.

Oddly enough, the reasons they're unsmoked is similar to why I never had sex with certain women.

A few are too much, um, everything. One is too ugly. One I want to get rid of.

The rest I just haven't gotten to yet.

I have dozens of unsmoked pipes... Doesn't bother me one bit. Neither does the premium I get when they are sold.
My saying was just that, a bunch of naked letters coming together on a closed road with psychiatrists in attendance and offering a potentially interesting pairing of like-minded concepts. It was meant to bring out counter-thoughts and it has. Clearly, I agree with your reasoning. It suits your purpose. Exactly what I would do if I sold anything. Well, except for maybe tobacco. I couldn't let it just sit there and not smoke it - I think it has something to do with the Code of the West.

Perfect example of a pipe I find super compelling and interesting, but one I doubt I'd like to smoke. Just not my style. But pretty breathtaking!
