There's a US pipe maker named Scott Thile. Here's some of his stuff:

Great guy. Super friendly, helpful to all, funny, smart, observant, and quite talented in a number of areas besides pipe making.
One of those areas is music. So, he started teaching and working with his kid, Chris, at an early age.
Shit got scary quickly. Chris went on to be a national-class mandolinist by the seventh grade or so, kept at it, and was awarded a McArthur Fellowship---the so called "Genius Grant"---a while back. He mostly played Bluegrass and Jazz, both traditional and updated.
Being Chris, though, he wanted more, so ventured into lands where few humans dare to tread regardless of instrument: Bach. As in J.S. As in, "You must be shitting me, that's impossible."
Here's his latest foray.

Wow...he really is good. He was fortunate to have a parent who worked with him at a young age like that.
And now playing with Yo-Yo Ma!

The name isn't common, so I wondered if Scott could be Chris' dad or relative. Chris has taken on the legacy radio show Prairie Home Companion after Garrison Keillor retired and has kept the show's tradition but also tweaked it to speak to his generation. Chris is fabulously talented. Don't know how long he'll stay with the radio show, but he'll certainly carry it along for a while. I've seen Chris live and his musical skills are expansive to say the least. Home schooling can be a blessing or not, but in this case, it worked well.

Chris Thiles instrument, the mandolin, is tuned just like a violin, but it has double strings on each of the four tunings. I think mandolin players have to be kinetic by nature because the strings must be continually plucked to sustain a tone. FYI.

Check out The Punch Brothers if you get a chance, particularly live. Amazing stuff. I believe Scott was actually playing bass when Nickel Creek won their grammy.
