As almost every other pipe smoker, my time to get inte devil's anse pipe has come... Before I start getting some of the great modern pipes inspired by the series, i wanted to see if I could find something similar but old and this is what I got.
All briar , size matches I think, shape and design match too and an orific bit.
What do you think, close enough?

If you want to go full authentic, know that Costner removed and tossed away the stem---meaning smoked it with the shank itself in his mouth---so the whole "pipe thing" would look more manly and less prissy on film.

(The pipe itself was bought at a small general store down the road from the set in the woods where the shoot was happening, during a break in takes. Costner saw the pipes on display and decided on the spot that a pipe would add to his character and also give him something to do with his hands.)

Meaning, you need to saw an inch or two off the one you found, and chew on the shank like a dog bone to put some tooth marks on it. puffy

Do we know all that info from an interview or an article that I can read?

So the original was basically a cutty with the stem removed? Interesting. I’m good with the Moonshine versions of these pipes, though at one point, P&C had some Baraccini pipes for super cheap that were essentially the same style.

I think you’re right on it. Seems like something that would have been in general stores in the later 19th century.

Why have pipe makers so failed to capture the true dimensions of the real thing? It is clearly a slim, almost pencil shanked rounded cutty. Like a forward canted apple or ball shape. Slim and short but not too short. This is why, while I love the Costner pipe, I have never found one I like enough to buy.
