Although Kevin has provided an answer, I was about to ask the honest question, "Why do women always seem to hold pipes like that?" It would seem that the pipe could easily roll to the side and dump ash.

Women throw baseballs in a strange way, they can't hold a hammer right, and they choose strange ways to hold a pipe...(The hysterical part is that Greta is trying to learn to fill and light her new Savinelli I bought her in Naples by herself- filled the bowl halfway full, lit it up...puffed in and out like she was playing a harmonica...and blew flaming ash out the top like Vesuvius erupting!)...and Harris- don't you go ruining that dog of mine- we worked very hard to get her to the point of being a spoiled brat....
