The magic of the last few minutes of the bowl!

Hey everyone, I'm new around here and fairly new to the pipe world I have been enjoying a pipe for the last year and a half or so. Just wanted to know if I'm the odd one out here but I always find myself completely enamoured with the last bit of the bowls I smoke. The character that the flavours and the smoke take on seem to take me away. I love the different qualities each stage of the bowl offers but sometimes that last bit is totally something else !

I find good Cigars to be like you describe but not pipes so much. The last 1/4 can be great but the last few puffs not so much.

I tend to get a consistent flavor from the top to the bottom of the chamber.

With mixtures I tend to have that experience more than with more 1 tobacco forward blends. I also get that when a cigar is blended with more kinds of filler which is quite obvious.

For me it depends on what I am smoking. Anything that was a bit too damp when loaded up tends to "pay me back" for my lack of patience in drying by leaving a damp clump on the bottom 1/4 that ill not stay lit and tastes like crap. Other times, I can absolutely experience what you are referring to.

Even those rare times when I’m surprised to find the bottom of the bowl. Not as flavorful as the first two thirds. The dottle is usually tossed.

Since I tend to puff my pipe a little fast the last 1/4 of the bowl tends to be rather hot.

It all depends on what I am smoking. I tend to smoke at the same speed and cadence throughout the bowl, but there are times that the bottom half is so much better than the top. Then again, there are times when the top portion is so good and the bottom isn't so great. That's one of the reasons we keep on smoking. We never really know what we are going to get until we get it.

I realise no one does this except me...LOL, but once I get the inital light, tamp, and relight, I tuck the stem between my crossed legs while setting in my camp rocker. The pipe never gets hot and I no longer get tongue bite. I am usally on the iphone checking the newest posts from the good folks here. I notice that what I smell is what I taste from top to bottom.

I have been chasing flavor to the bottom of my bowl for years. The last third has a ton of flavor. I have to be careful not to suck in a mouthful of hot ash chasing flavor to the bottom. I pretty much have it down to a science and it has been a while since I got a mouthful of ash. I am also careful not to heat the bottom of the bowl too much as I don't want to damage the bowl in any way.

The last bit of a bowl always tastes much worse. Maybe it's because I use 9mm filtered pipes most of the time.

For blends heavy in burley/Kentucky I especially enjoy the last half of the bowl. After the perique or Latakia dies back a bit and the Virginia starts to get some more body. Things really meld.

Might have something to do with churchwarden and what dogs can do to themselves. But dogs can't light a pipe.

Always.. Or close to always. Last 1/3 of the bowl is where I find the best flavor and cadence.

Second part of the boil is just something delicious, especially 1/4?, as well as the bottom of the cigar, I even have a special tool to killing cigar to the deep end.
