It's cute. It's visual. It's distinctive. It's the L'Anatra duck on the shank of most of their line of pipes. But I just don't want a "hood ornament" on my pipe. It would snag my thumb every time I was packing the pipe. It would snag my clothes, especially sweaters. No harm done, but it strikes me as annoying. I think you either love those little duck heads, or you don't. Do you love 'em or not so much?

I think the ducks are more popular than not. I just have a reaction to embellishments unless they are done just right. I don't like the little metal plaques on the shanks of pipes of the year, on some Savinellis and others. It just doesn't add anything; I'd prefer it in the stamping. Likewise, unless they're done with a kind of artistry, I don't like gemstones mounted on pipes. One of the Forums members did some of those, and he got it just right, remarkably -- placed them just right and kept the size down. But others I've seen look clunky. I think the ducks are a sales point, just not for me. Other things being equal, I think simplicity sets off artistry on pipes.

I have two of them. It's a mighty fine pipe, so as long as it doesn't holler "Aflac!" In the middle of a nice, peaceful smoke, it's ok.

I don't have any L'Anatra pipes, but if I did I do believe I would knock the thing off. Those pipes have a good rep so I don't know why the idea to add the duck was necessary, unless they want to be the Izod of pipes.

I'm sure they're fine pipes but, whenever I see one, I keep thinking of Carl Reiner in "The Jerk".

Not against the duck, just prefer the clean lines on their other versions.
Love this...

Yes, l'Anatra does about a third of their inventory without the ducks, so if you don't want a duck, but want this brand, they have 'em, and fine looking pipes they are. Just don't get out in front of brad when he's smoking his with the duck attached. I misspoke in my original post. The ducks are affixed to the stem, not the shank.

I don't own one, but I've looked at several and most likely will own one or more eventually. The duck head seems so small and unobtrusive, I don't really even get the whole question....as that little duck head, on top of the shank is all but innocuous in my reasoning. To each their own though.

I think the duck is rather corny. A duck stamp incorporated into their logo would be far classier.

The duck would snag my cleaning cloth and then I'd break down in tears.

I don't own one, but I've heard nothing bad about the pipes, and purchasing one at some point is on my list. I bet they put the duck on the stem just for sh&ts and giggles, and I find it a bit fun.
"Why is there a duck on your pipe?"
"Why not?" :D

The duck is kinda cute ... I don't know if that's an adjective I'd want associated with my pipe, though.
