One of my earliest acquisitions was this basket pipe, listed on P&C as "German #26".

I love the shape of the pipe and it smokes well, despite a couple of flaws.

The bit is atrocious, the top portion slight and misshapen, all but eliminating the clench option.

The finish is mediocre but has survived my early days of poor cadence and heat anyway.

I'm considering having a nicer bit made for it. I'm also toying with the idea of sending it off to an artisan as a loose template for maybe my first commission piece.

Were I to do that, I'd maybe want the top slightly dished toward the chamber but, otherwise very close to the shape, as is.

It IS my designated Black Frigate pipe, so I want to do it "right".

Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.

I still wish I had my second pipe it was a basket pipe. Sure it had some flaws but it was beauty and a decent smoker. It was rusticated and bent and a pretty red color. I smoked it until I got my Brebbia which smoked so much nicer that I gave it to a friend who I haven't talked to in ages and wonder if he's still smoking a pipe.

So, considering my possibilities, does anyone recommend an artisan that might enjoy a project like this?

Walt Cannoy. He's funny, cocky, arrogant about his skills and a hell of a good pipe maker. He should be right up your alley.
