Today I was looking for a Comoy's to post in the chimney post. I found myself looking through several boxes of pipes and pipes and pipes. More than I can smoke. Many good pipes, many decent ones and some ordinary ones. I could sell them, but for now it's a job I don't have the energy to face. On the other hand, I'm not going to buy a sports car with the money, so the money will be diluted in trivial expenses that won't bring me the same satisfaction as the pipes. I could refine the collection by selling the common ones and the decent ones to buy fewer but good pipes. But considering that in my market a Peterson's starts at $300, I would feel cheated.

Mine are in three general areas in various states of storage and overall a mess of organization. Some gloomy Saturday or Sunday before the winter ends I'll gather up and sort. Also thinking of a mylar project and eliminating some jars (some I don't want to mess with the aging that's already occurred, regardless of how unpredictable it may be) and getting other tobacco out of larger bulk bags that aren't ideal long term - will make the tobacco storage tubs lighter and fewer.

...and then, once per week, open the box(/xes), look at them and whisper in a strange voice: mmmy prrreciousss!... or not? :col:
Nah, they're individually bubble wrapped and sealed. I've only got my two Falcons in the house to smoke. I really don't see past pipes as any more than items to smoke tobacco in. One is really no different than another.

I, too, am nearing a culling event. Every few years i tend to let go of the pipes i don't smoke often enough and trade up for a few new ones. Can you not order online to avoid the local market prices?
It is a bit uncertain as to whether I will receive it directly at home and not have to go pick it up at customs. Also, although the tax has been cut in half, I still have to pay 30% tax to buy abroad.

I try and limit my number of pipes to being able to fit into the cigar box I keep them in, with an exception for the meer I own which is kept in its custom case. So when I want to get one I trade out one I wasn't fond of, I started off with a lot of placeholders. All of my briars are estates or seconds, I get estates from antique shops and I've even gotten a few by trading them for other pipes. Maybe you could check out local antiques shops and see if they'd be interesting in buying a group of pipes from you. I'd imagine that's easier than selling them individually online

Yes. I have been buying pipes from all kinds of antique dealers for over two decades. There are two kinds of antique dealers, serious antique dealers who deal in high quality antique furniture, utensils and art. These types of dealers do not carry pipes. Then there are those who sell antique items of all kinds. They do have pipes, but their business is based on buying for pennies and selling for dollars, with the occasional find of the really valuable piece which they usually sell to serious antique dealers. They wouldn't pay you even $100 for a box full of pipes. I think the way to go is to sell them one by one on the Internet.

They take up so little space. I see no reason to feel stress. Pull out a 7 day set and shelf the rest.

Or make up as many 7 day sets as you can. It’ll feel less overwhelming.

Grab a new set of 7 every few months. Enjoy what you have.
I do more or less that. I have two 6-pipe racks in the library and I carry 2 pipes in the car and rotate them. Still, there are pipes I have never smoked and others that have not been smoked for years.

Sell off what you don't smoke and buy some new pipes and/or tobacco with the funds you recoup. Or save it for a rainy day.

Over the past few years I've kept track of what pipes I smoke each month. I've then taken that data and used it to determine what pipes to keep and what pipes to possibly eliminate. I've since then I've either sold or gifted over 20, meers, cobs and briars. The money I made from those I used to buy a couple new or estate pipes or some more tobacco.

I've bought 4 pipes this year, more than in the 3 years preceding, when I bought no pipes. Three of them were particularly rare Vintage Barlings that I had wanted to add to my modest collection, had given up on ever finding, and which suddenly showed up. The fourth was an interesting pipe with a wild stem that appealed.

I need to go through the pile and start selling off the pipes that I no longer smoke. Same goes for the cellar. I've already sold off some OOP tins and it felt great to be able to sell them to someone who really likes the blend and was sad that it was no longer available.
