I'm curious about this blend but at the same time I keep wondering if I would be ahead to simply top something like WCC Old Dominion with a good rum and letting it sit in a jar for a while before smoking.Here's my review on the original if it'll help.
The spicy, richly deep sweet rum and the tingly pepper from the earthy, woody, sugary and slight sour St. James Acadian perique are the first things that hit you as you light up. That sensation lasts from start to finish as this blend has a very consistent flavor. The topping never weakens, which doesn’t surprise me as the mixture was soaked in that rum for a week. The perique is likely to be around sixty percent of the product, and also offers some plum and figs. The aged red Virginia (from one particular 2003 North Carolina crop) has a fermented ripe dark fruitiness, wood, bread, vegetation, and earth, and is noticeable much of the time in a supporting role. Just as obvious in a back up position is the woody, nutty, earthy, herbal, vegetative, floral, sour and barbecue sweet dark fired Kentucky, whose spiciness often separates itself from that of the perique. I don’t really notice much from the Dominican Republic black cavendish, which is used to add a little smoothness, and is present in a small amount. Has a medium to strong nic-hit. The strength and taste are strong and very filling. I recommend you take your time smoking this for best effect, and don’t use a big or narrow bowl.
The tobacco was a little moist when I opened the tin, but I saw no need to dry it. The burn rate was slow to moderate, and required a few relights. It will leave a little moisture in the bowl, but no dottle. I experienced no bite, but your tongue will tingle some from the spice content. Despite its strength, it wasn't harsh at any time nor did it burn hot. Most assuredly, this is a blend for the experienced smoker, and is not an all day smoke as by design. For that type of smoker, I rate it at three stars out of four.
I didn't realize I had neglected to mention the plum aspect of the perique. It is noticeable, but I'd say the spice was much more prominent. Can you tell if the spiciness is from the rum or the perique? I prefer my perique on the plummy side.
I never buy more than 2oz of any tobacco blend.I just realize you said you're a newbie. I wouldn't go hog wild and buy 30 tins but I'd definitely get a couple. Take it from me, there's nothing worse than starting out, not being into something, then getting into it at a later date only to have it be discontinued by then (Here's looking at you McClelland ? )
And even still, these small batches are pretty dang popular amongst us pipeheads. If you really came back to it 5 years later and still wanted to get rid of it.. well, I can't imagine you'd have a hard time finding someone who'd want to take a few tins of half-decade aged small batch C&D off your hands! Haha
That's perfect for a blend you're just trying, that's my standard sample size as well. But you're definitely going to want to start purchasing in more bulk on your favorite blends because in the last 3 years or so blends and even entire companies have been getting axed left and right with usually very little preemptive notice.I never buy more than 2oz of any tobacco blend.
oh that's the beast they're talking about. Could be clearer on the tin and call it the great beast. Well then the blend at least makes sense.I'm definitely interested. I'm not a huge Perique fan per se, but I thoroughly enjoy anything rum-soaked and the story of Mr. Crowley along with it pushed my intrigue over the edge. I'll snag a few for the cellar. Worse comes to worse it can always be used for an interesting blender as Elasmo stated.

Tossed in a new Nording compass as well. Some of the best grain I've seen on this burner series. Now just have to decide if I want to blast it to bring out those rings....??
