So I have been reading about how great HH Anny Kake is so I grabbed a tin on my last order. After about 3 puffs or so, I had to dump the bowl. My tongue was on fire, it was pure acid to me and I couldn't get a cold drink fast enough. I was really hoping it was going to be something tasty for me, but no suck luck. I sear this stuff has a base of McClellend 5100, because I have not been burned that badly since I smoked that blend. Looks like I will be trading that one away.
On a positive note, I really liked the GL Pease JackKnife Plug, that was very tasty and after some more sampling, could make it into my permanent rotation. Another great one I tried was an old favorite that I had forgotten about. It is Frbourg&Treyer Vintage. It is a beautiful brown VA flake that is similar to Cut Virginia Plug, but not as citrusy. It is a great tasting flake that I will be cellaring for sure.

Anni Kake is delicious. I'm sad it burned ya, it's super tasty. And virginias usually sting me a little but this was nothing but smooth sailing.
More for me. ^_^

flyfishn, I smoked the Macbaren and it didn't bite me at all, very smooth and tasty. It is so weird how some things bite one guy and not the other.
I just decided I am going to give my son a crack at the Anny Kake, maybe he will like it. He has been smoking my pipes more frequently so before I trade it I should let him take a crack at it.

I've been thinking about ordering some Anny Kake. I love the Old Dark Fired. Shawn hooked me up with some flakes. It's got no bite at all, I really enjoy smoking that stuff on these cool Ohio Autumn evenings.

MacB Plumcake did that to me. I thought of coating my mouth with wax like Homer did at the chili festival, but it was just easier to move on to another blend...

Yea man, that is weird. We both got burned by LA Red, but Anny Kake was easy on my tongue but burnt you. Now I am perplexed. I figured We had the same issue Cigrmaster. Although Anny Kake isn't in my top 10 now that I have took a leap into Flakes and plugs, I did rather enjoy it. Glad you liked your other selections.

Anniversary Kake is one of my favorite VA's. It has very little bite with me and I am pretty sensitive. Anything by Mac Baren bites me bad, although I am starting to get a lot better at packing and smoking, and Plum Cake doesn't bite nearly as much as it used to.

I am very sad to hear this happened to you. I love Anni Kake and would recommend it to anyone (anyone who haven't already recommended it to). I'll have to keep this in mind in the future. Damn, I'm sorry to hear this.

Cigrmaster: I had the same problem with Anniversary Kake until I dried it out. Mine came very, very moist in a tin. See if that makes any difference.

Yes, exactly. Night and day difference on many a(all) tobacco when allowed to dry out.
(BUT NOT TOO MUCH) :)

Mine was not overly moist at all. I even thought to myself cool, a tobacco I don't have to dry out. Even if it had been too moist that wouldn't have caused the type of burn I experienced. This is a body chemistry issue I have with certain blends.

That sucks Harris. I have been burned but have never had true bite due to body chemistry. How long does it take to recover from that? I've known you have issues with the some VA's due to your body chemistry. I hope I never experience that. Sorry man.

Isn't there a pill yet that balances out the bodies chemistry to totally counter-act the tongue bite reaction???
Maybe the PMS (Pipes Magazine Science) dept can get to work on that.

That's a shame, cigrmaster. I find Aniv Kake to be very tasty. Hope your son has better luck with it.

gwtwdbss, it only takes some swishing with Biotene and a cold drink to recover from that because I know to put the pipe down instantly. If I had smoked a whole bowl it would take a couple of days to recover.
I wish there was a pill because there are many blends I would like to smoke but can't. I remember trying like hell to smoke McClellend 5100, I would dry it till crispy, tried different pipes but nothing worked. At least today I know it is not technique or moisture issues, just an alkalinity thing.
