Question for the pipe-makers out there...do you groove the inside chambers of the pipe or leave it smooth? I would think a textured chamber gives the carbon something to hold on to

And thus builds cake faster...hmmm....pipe-makers..thoughts on this?

When I make a pipe I don't go out of my way to rough up the inside of the bowl. I just drill it and leave it as is. Unless of course for some reason it would be extremely rough for some reason, then I'd sand and smooth it just a bit. But I'd still use a bit rougher sandpaper. I also do sand a bit if I get any stain in the bowl, which doesn't happen often.
This is just my opinion (Although I've heard others say it as well) Leaving the bowl just a bit rougher does make the cake that builds up stick a bit better. It may be a wives tale, but that's the way I look at it.

A pondering: A rough surface would leave something for the carbon to adhere to, certainly, but would it also not be more prone to simply catching fire? I know if I drop my torch on my workbench, the areas that are still smooth don't begin to smolder, but anywhere with gouges does; in my mind it would be the same with the tobacco chamber in a pipe.
