Tankard Pipe Recommendations?/Atlantic Pipe

Hi all,

I'm intrigued by the tankard shaped pipe, but am a little nervous about pulling the trigger on one. It looks like it holds copious amounts of tobacco, but how does it hold in hand and clench? Second question: saw a Peterson Atlantic which appears to have a glossy finish that has a tendency to slough off. Is there a way to avoid this problem, and does anyone have such an Atlantic where they never had this problem?

I know the Peterson tankards, though the design has never grabbed me. Nording makes one or two series in a tankard-like configuration, and Tsuge has those, although they are somewhat high priced. Some of the Nordings have a "keystone" filter feature, so though the pipes are inexpensive, they are designed to use the extra filtering or de-moisturizing feature, and I wouldn't want to complicate life with that feature. I'd shop for a while and consider carefully. I think Forums members would be interested to hear what you think of it if you buy a tankard. I have a factory pipe poker by LaRocca with some folksy rusticated carving that fills the bill for a tall cylindrical bowl for me, and you might also want to look at poker shapes to see how they compare.

I have a Peterson Tankard with red rustication. It was my first briar and over time Ive really come to enjoy it for its clenchability, if clenching is your thing. It’s light and smokes flakes like a champ. It has a very small diameter, especially if it has a decent cake, and it’s a bit over an inch tall. I enjoy it, though my least favourite feature is the p-lip.

I have a Peterson barrel (a tankard with an edged bottom), and it is a rather small pipe! I enjoy it very much, but just thought you might like to know that these pipes aren't on the larger side.

Hard to go wrong with a Pete tankard. I don't know anyone whose owned one and would disagree. And 2 thumbs up from me for the P lip.

I have to agree, I like the Peterson Tankard. I have one and the cut of the pipe is so classic. I think Peterson does a fantastic rendering of this shape.

Even though the p-lip is not something I enjoy, I’d buy another Tankard to go into the rotation. It is my smallest pipe, but there’s been times where I’ve smoked FVF or Escudo for nearly two hours out of it. Its small but it loves the flakes.

I've got a Tsuge tankard I like a lot. Recommended, but it might be a little small for some.

$45 for that Peterson Tankard, my favorite rendition of this classic, you can't go wrong. As Marty states, it's in excellent condition and only needs a little stem clean up (Bar Keeper's Friend should make it shine). I have this exact pipe an it's such a lovely cut. Peterson really does this shape justice.
And, as crashthegrey says, it helps a brother out; can't go wrong!
