So, has anyone sanded and waxed a pipe to a nice sheen and had any luck doing so? I fancy a shiny wood pipe but not sure of the potential success of taking sand paper to one of my few pipes.
A lot of high end pipe makers with deny they do this... even though they do. A thin coat of button shillac can do wonders. Don't buy the high priced stuff, the cheap type works better, but don't ask me why....

If you go through the full stages of grit and compounds, yes. Don’t try to make big leaps between grits and take your time. I go up to 1500-2000 plus back and forth between Tripoli and white diamond compound until I get the clean sheen I want. Then finish it with carnauba wax.
