Partial rustication in one side with on the other side a beautiful flame grain says that there are some problem on the briar.Don't love partial rustication like that.Full rustication is in some way part of the shape like sandblast.Partial rustication only cover problems and don't give to my eyes a pleasant effect

Oh no, what is this feeling in my wallet. Oh no, it's PAD!!!!
Dude, that is awesome. Have you bought it yet or can I still snipe it from you?
I like partial rustys. I had my dime on a partial Nording church but, they called me back and said they were really out of them. So I am searching for another.

I have only one partially ruticated Boswell. I suspect I will avoid anymore of them until I learn a bit more.

I too think that the extra carving and darker added color was in fact due to a flaw in the Briar Grain.

I bought the one I have for two reasons, I was a newbie, and in this particular case, it was a more classic shape, and the irregular cutaway was actually very attractive. A fusion of sorts that has several design principles right.

I have wondered if the these issues, that are often treated in this manner, compromise the stuctural integrity of the briar. As I mentioned, until I am positive, I will not buy anymore.

That is a pretty sweet pipe, and dang it is huge. Even if it had a flaw in the briar and that is why it is partially rusticated, I am sure that thing smokes amazing!

Rusticated OPaul and Shotshell..the Boswell's are great people and

outstanding pipe makers . I suggest if you can snag one of their gems to do so

That looks a beauty, although too big for me, and i agree about the rustication.

If there was a flaw then why no ruisticate the other side to match? Individual taste i suppose....

"Briar is full of flaws"

not always, whould say from some region/country rarely you'll find briar with very bad flaws. Some sand pits are possible but nothing that needs rustication. For second choice briar many brands have their "seconds"

That's a problem for american carvers that can't choice their briar personally and must accept what find in the mail.So some great ebauchons/plateau come to states but much more are so so briar clocks .Carvers that usually add rustications and rarely shows flame grain needs to find better briar
