Okay so I got my pouch of 79 today. Pretty excited to try it out. The humidity here will be down for the next couple hours so I have some drying out.

Here's my question about it. Usually when I unfold a pouch I see the words break seal gently. Not here, I unfolded my pouch and it was just open. I assume this is normal?

Anyway, what should I expect? Do you like Mix 79? Definately smells different, but not in a bad way.

It’s got a wintergreen and root beer note. I wonder if it has horehound in it.

If I recall correctly, my Mixture No. 79 pouch was sealed, and it had a little tape fastener to hold closed the flap as well. But I don't think the lack of it being sealed will undo the blend. It is sold in volume, so I don't think it has a lot of shelf time, and a little drying isn't bad. I find 79 an even burning, nicely balanced aromatic. I think it has been joked about as an old fogey codger blend, but it has been around a long time for a good reason. It's pretty good.

Yeah, it definitely wasn't dried out any haha. I just found it odd. It didn't look as if any adhesive was ever there to seal it. Oh well, thanks for the response!

I'm curious. Is the bulk Mixture 79 the same as the tub/pouch version? The bulk version is sure less expensive then the tub. From what I get from Tobacco Reviews is that the bulk has more of a burley taste and smokes cooler, but still has that Mixture 79 topping, which I love.
I’ve wondered this too

Anybody have an opinion on whether the bulk or the pouch is better? I know Ray says the tub is better than the pouch, this is also the case with Prince Albert imo. I'm not going to commit to the tub until I smoke a couple of bowls.

Of course Mixture #79 is the same in the pouch and tub. No company is going to make different runs for different packaging of any tobacco blend. That would not cost effective, not to mention the extra labor and press time. Any difference in taste that anybody perceives is due to fact that tubs will hold the flavor longer than a pouch will.

When I was a kid I loved the smell of my grandfather smoking his pipe. He was the person who gave me my first pipe when I was in college in the late 1960s and started my piping journey. He regularly smoked Sutliff Mixture #79.

Fast forward to years later - I picked a pouch in his honor but after reading many scathing reviews of it I hesitated to try it. Kept the pouch in a sealed jar for actually a few years. Finally took the plunge and am now a fan. I consider it to be the ultimate American “Lakeland”. I still have that pipe...

I just got my first pouch of this today and I’m so glad I found your thread, mine came exactly the same way and I had the same thought.... is this normal?! And I guess it is! Haha

the topping in my pouch doesn’t seem very intense in the bag or in the first smoke or two, I was concerned that my open bag allowed some of the topping to disappear. It certainly wasn’t dry in there but it wasn’t “wet towel” either. What was your experience with the topping intensity?

other No.79 fans is it normally pretty mild topping wise? I have to say I wouldn’t mind it if it was more present I’m digging it!

You needn't buy that much, but at regular price the bulk is less than $30/pound.?

That being said, many of my favorites have 5-20 pound sections in my cellar.
