Easy for you to say. Went to a large city in the Empire State to stock up, what a treat. 70 mph bumper to bumper traffic but no problem with my wheel man (wife) that could give Mario Andretti a few tips. Often consult Google for shop ratings 4 stars sounded good. My GPS had a hard time in finding same. The outside looked like a converterd garage complete with plywood covered windows. It would be kind to refer that the area was seedy. The town has a body count average of 3 a day. Stock of tobac was jumbled but better than average, the usual bongs were not present. Many jars of bulk and tins, plenty of pipes most with oxidized stems piled up in the dust covered cases. The owner behind bullet proof glass complete with breaded beard wearing a Sherpa hat was very helpful. Upon exit observed bag man knocking on widow of locked car doors that departed when I produced my Glock, will shop on line in future !

Where was this? Camden, N.J.? That little city has had a hard life. I'm surprised the proprietor can make a go of it, even with the bullet-proof glass. Doesn't sound like a pipe smoking area. But certainly an interesting trip, and I'm glad you didn't encounter any (more) trouble.

The poet Walt Whitman had a small house in Camden toward the end of his life. Not that this was actually Camden necessarily. I think at the time, later 19th Century, it was fairly bucolic.

Well, he said empire state, so I am guessing a place like Albany or God forbid Binghamton.

Jersey is the garden state.

Why the hell would anyone start a business in a place where you are worried about getting shot? That just doesn't makes sense to me. I could see a pawn shop or a title loan place, or even a liquor store... but, a pipe shop? WTF.

A lot of pipe enthusiasts are wanna be Maryters. Duh.

I think you have missed the whole point of supporting a local B&M.

I agree and maybe this guy was doing the best with what he has but I guess he should of offer to pay gas money or something to those who drive a distance to his shop.

I walked 23 miles last week to buy some Violet gum at the nearest convince store that still carried it. I saw some teenagers on skateboards with mohawks which what looked like Super Soakers filled with what I think was urine. I was about to reach for the luger which I carry in my boot but they saw the intense look in my eyes and skated off.

you're reminding me of my last job. It was doing billing for radiologists and my tasks where filing the billing work for a chain of hospitals in up state new york. What the heck man. Some nice places there but some sad sad places. With huge problems. And the hospitals where ridiculous too. Worst ones in our companies stables. Seriously they had staff that was too stupid to work as ditch diggers in most places. Had to deal with the worst con job of a person too that they hired as a consultant as well. Basically I am saying I understand why people in some places use so much herion, to deal with that. New York city looks like a childrens show that kids complain about being too soft before watching teletubbies in comparison.

I’ll occasionally support my local B&M, which is actually pretty nice, but 2-3X the cost of SPC is hard to justify when buying more than a couple of tins or cigars.
