Hi folks, I've been on a bit of a pipe bender now that the weather is changing. Over the winter I only smoked at the end of the day cloistered away in a little out door smoking nook (very frequently in full snow gear). It's already short season here in CT and I'm taking the pipe out and about with me during the day and have been trying to identify new styles of pipes that will work for what I"m doing, hiking, fishing, gardening, etc.
Anyway, just curious if folks have any strong feelings about nose warmers now that the trend is over? The pipes I'm looking at all have full sized bowls and are between 3.5 to 4.25" in length. I'm wondering if there are certain things I should look out for with respect to weight, balance, etc.

I like nose warmers, but I choose those that have small, narrow bowls. Nose warmers with those characteristics fit with the jostling, outdoor smoking to which I subject them.

I like short pipes that still retain a look of balance and don't look too truncated. My favorite carver, last time I visited him at his stand at the State Fair, pulled from under the counter a thick-stemmed short pipe with a sufficient bowl, a little reminiscent of a Stanwell pot but smaller and thicker. After prowling his entire display, that was the pipe I bought, and it is a great one, more than a short-smoke, and durable for pocket duty. I don't have many short pipes, but I really like a few that take my fancy.

That combo Monty55 is showing is about perfect for me. I don't have one as short as the top one in his pic, but I have 4 legends with the nosewarmer Forever Stem. Just the right length and balance for me.

I just got my first Cob - a Huck Finn. The Tom Sawyer has the same bowl but shorter overall length. A lot of Pokers have short stems. Two makers are Scott Hudson and Fat Bastard. I''v got a Hudson on the way. Peterson has the Sport Pipe, but it only comes with the P-Lip.

YMMV, but for me nose warmers mean short stems and a burnt tongue.

I don't puff so furiously that only a churchwarden will cool the smoke stream,

but having my tongue only a couple of inches away from the ember is just too much.

If you're outdoors, breezy conditions will make things worse; but I can recommend

that you stay with folded or cube-cut flakes for their slower burning properties.

I'm a fan of nosewarmers and have several of them ranging from Big Ben Barbados line that have full size bowls to a few of my Chacom cuttys with smaller bowls. I prefer my full size pipes to have wide stems as I find them easier to clench and the Big Bens provide that with ease. Question to ask is are you going with a straight style or a bent? My Barbados Egg is a full bent but sits perfectly in your mouth and rests comfortably against your chin when clenching so you hardly notice the weight. My cuttys are half the weight but I notice them because the full weight of the pipe is supported by my teeth alone.

Does anyone notice this is in actual practice? Or is it just the concept? I only have one small nosewarmer, but I don't get bite from it or even feel the heat. But, I usually don't reach for it very often because I just get tired of the smoke wafting all up in my eyes. And, yeh, I think it makes me look kind of dumb, which isn't hard, ha ha. But, having the smoke in my eye, squinting, with a wee tad bit of pipe in my jaw makes me look like I am trying to be Popeye.

I have a Brebbia that is 4 1/4 inches. I keep it in my pocket all the time when I'm fly fishing. It's quite small, something like a scoop shape. I love that little pipe. It smokes well and the short saddle bit and small size makes it easy to clench. I must admit that I find some of the newer creations a little disproportionate, short stems but big bowls. They just seem out of scale to me. But that's just my opinion.

Maxx,
A slightly smaller Nielsen pipe is what got me interested in these pipes. The pipe you posted is so close that I had to do a double take! The one I saw is essentially 3.5 and smooth...oh and more expensive. Amazing coincidence! Thanks for the link, that's a new pipe shop for me. I'm gonna check them out.
Cosmic,
Short stems don't impact the temperature of smoke reaching your mouth, not really. It's possible that an open draw with shorter travel can lead to a lower burn temp if you have a tendency to overdraw. There are other factors at play that may cause someone to experience a hotter smoker from a short stemed pipe for sure.
Ogre,
Hmm, you raise a good point. Short bents aren't really considered nose warmers, are they? It looks like nearly all full bents would qualify based on length. I guess I was thinking straight but maybe I'll rethink that. How do you find the quality of the Big Ben? They have a few check mark shaped pipes that I find eye catching.
McTinner,
Pmed

McTinner,

I'm a fan of Big Ben but I have only tried the Barbados line. I have the full bent egg and the roadisian from that like and I like them a lot. I call the full bent egg a nosewarmer simply because if you stretched the pipe out straight I'd bet it would still be under 5" long. It's a very compact bent when compared to some of my Stanwells or Rattrays.

I have to say I do love the Missouri Meerschaum Mini Cob. It's perfect for a short bowl during intermission of a hockey game. Doesn't really require any tamping. I don't get smoke in my eyes from it. If you're looking for a stubby pipe that won't get in the way and lasts around 15mins then do yourself a favor and for $2 pick one up.
I also think that's why the Devil Anse pipe was such a canted cutty. It had to be canted dramatically to keep the smoke out of his eyes since it was such a short nosewarmer. Not many carvers cant their "Devil Anse" the way Kevin Costner's was in the movie/show. Not many will make it such a nosewarmer either.

Cosmic, I agree with the eye problem in relationship to short pipes. I have a full bent ( actually have several ) but one in particular really puts the smoke in my eyes. It is a very short Danish. I will probably get rid of it as it is most annoying.

I have no really short straight pipes. Maybe since the bowl is higher smoke in your eyes is not a problem for them.
