i have been smoking aromatic's for several years now and have just stared smoking some English with a heavy Latakia blend. i really enjoy Peter Stokkebye 52 Proper English but am looking for a few others to try as well. i am looking for a deep woodys/earth smell and a heavier taste. have tried many and was thinking about trying Old Iron Sides, Ten Russians, Pirate Cake, Frog Morton, and McClelland No. 5125 Coyote Classic in the next order. looking for any suggestions or input. am a bit worried Ten Russians and Pirate Cake might be a bit TO strong?

I just tried Pirate Cake a few days ago. If you like your Latakia aplenty then Pirate should keep you busy. I also found it very similar to GL Pease Odyssey. Both where too much for me. I like Latakia as a condiment, not as front player.
Frog Morton On the Bayou is perfect for my taste. Next is On the Town (which is more Latakia upfront then its aforementioned brother - at least according to my taste).

Another good one which seems to be in the middle ground between too much and too little is Balkan Blue. I personally find it too Latakia forward as well but I cannot deny that its a deep satisfying blend.
I also recently tried HH Vintage Syrian and it was sublime. I had only one bowl so I'm not sure if its going to dethrone FMOTB. I'm planning to pop a tin open once my current Latakia based blend is consumed to test that theory :).
Last but not least is Bald Headed teacher from 4Noggins.com. Which I discovered as part of the Crawl last month. To my limited experience, its a unique Latakia blend.
Hope this is helpful. :puffy:

I enjoy Dunhill English blends very much. Nightcap is quite a Lat bomb, but some of their other offerings are a little less robust in the Lat flavor department. My Mixture 965 is actually considered to be a "Scottish" style blend, since it incorporates Cavendished tobacco, but it is still pretty hearty. London Mixture is very good, still strong, and Early Morning Pipe will take you a little down the strength ladder. Peterson's Old Dublin has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and I really like PS Proper English like you do. Cornell & Diehl have some very good offerings as well; my favorite of theirs is Star of the East. I have tried several of their Lat blends, and while I can't say I disliked any of them, I always gravitate back to SOTE. Welcome aboard!

McCelland Three Oaks Syrian and Lancer's Slices always scratch the lat itch I get.

+1 for Nightcap. G.L. Pease's Gaslight is my personal favorite latakia blend, you might like it, very smokey.

C&D's - Mountain Camp, Byzantium, and Star of the East. All very good
Capt Earl's - 10 Russians is good and stout.
Pease's - Gaslight isn't to be missed.

Cornell & Diehl Star of the East is my go-to for a balanced (but Lat-heavy) Latakia blend. It's weaker than something like Ten Russians but should be more flavourful than your average English blend.

You can get it in flake or ribbon cut, I mostly have the ribbon and it's been some of my most memorable bowls...
(Sitting on the porch enjoying the first warm spring air of 2015, I can't wait for winter to come so that I can enjoy its end next spring.)

Dunhill Standard is a good medium English, and more lat forward than London or EMP. Durbar is another worthy offering. (Dunno why people act like EMP, London, MM 965,and Nightcap are the only Dunhill lat blends. :P )
Hearth & Home Larry's Blend is also worth your consideration, and I don't think has been mentioned.

Aggree with every pick listed thus far. I'll add Rich Gotlieb's Owl Head with Black Cavendish, Latakia, Oriental/Turkish, and Virginias. You can order it from www.4noggins.com. I was introduced to it in our August tobacco crawl and it was one of my favorites, along with Prairie Wind.
