I've always dreamed of teaching at Hillsdale, with its 'young fogey,' great books thing going, and reading this simply confirms all my instincts
Most places I have taught over the last ten years have banned tobacco of any sort outright, or banished smokers to second-rate citizen areas. I have a new teaching possibility at a school that seems wonderful in many regards, but I am somewhat ashamed to admit that their zero tolerance of tobacco on campus makes me question it, not because I somehow NEED my 'fix,' but because it says something about the attitude and values of a place of learning if they can't respect the smoking of a pipe on a bench in the quad, chatting with students and colleagues about all the deep and wonderful things in life
Reading what all of you have to say here reminds me I am NOT insane, just slightly out of touch with the fashions and trends of a society that cannot recognize the beauty of a good smoke. I take solace in knowing that the greats like Tolkien, Lewis, Chesterton, Twain or Joyce are with me on this, even if they have passed on to the great smoking room in the sky. . .
