So I have five or six boxes of wooden strike anywhere matches, most stored but two

opened. However, the scratch surface on the side of the boxes wears out after about

ten match strikes. So that got me to thinking. I went to the local gem and mineral show

that's held at the fairgrounds. I found a nice piece of stone sawed into a slice, smooth

top and bottom and rough on the edges, and I thought that might be a rough surface

that stays rough, and it looks good, like a nifty dust collector. Four bucks. A nice

oval/round beach stone would have done nicely too, and I may pick one up next time

I'm at the ocean. But it does the trick. Just make sure it has the rough surface.

Incidentally, I'm a dedicated match user; don't like lighters.

I also have that dilemma with those paper boxes and the striker. I keep mine out on the patio in a rubbermaid container, but it still must pick up moisture or wears out long before the 300 matches are exhausted (Diamond Strike on Box) I might have to find a similar stone.

...or a piece of sandpaper wrapped around a block of wood and stapled to it. But a stone should last

indefinitely, whereas a piece of sandpaper would eventually need replacing. A small matter, but easily

solved with a good, scratchy surfaced stone.

I use my Grandfather old 8 inch / 2 inch Grinding wheel I found in his old workshop, I lay it flat and put long matches in hole and strike on stone, works great and I have a something to remind me of him!

I'm missing something (as usual). If they're "strike anywhere" you really don't need the striking surface on the side of the box. I used to light these on the leg of my jeans, on the underside of tables, anywhere (I guess that's where they get the name).

Jeans, bigvan? Never tried that before (don't think I will, either, lol), but pretty much anything the least bit rough will work. Bricks, rocks, asphalt. Come to think of it, just about any old piece of stone would do for a pocket-ready striking surface.

Strike anywhere--aren't they only the ones with the sulphur tip?
Yep. Wish I could find them locally - I used to be able to light 'em with my thumbnail, and I've got a waterproof Marbles matchbox, metal with a knurled texture that would work perfectly. I keep a couple of spare strips from the smaller "strike on box" boxes in it, along with the kitchen-sized matches.

bigvan, good point. But the strike anywhere concept doesn't work too well inside where the

anywhere might not be agreeable or kind to various furniture surfaces, etc. Even on a porch,

you can leave a little trail of stripes that might not please ones better half. And of course,

I don't want anyone, even myself, striking those matches any-old-where in my dear old car.

So this stone idea.... I love that grinding wheel with the match supply in the middle. If you

didn't already smoke a pipe, you'd have to take one up for that!

A semi-smooth rock from you backyard would probably do; has worked for me.

Exotac Cases are pretty good for keeping the matches dry...

Just picked up this match holder/striker at the Las Vegas show a couple weeks ago. It's a great addition to my chair side table. Rob Denholtz from California makes them and had quite a few at the show. Most of them sold and they were very affordable.
