Whilst doing yet more family research today I came upon a media report of my 2nd cousin 5 x removed Richard Stennett Sandall and how he came about his unusual demise.

One shouldn't laugh but I can't help smiling as I imagine him chasing the rat around his shop.....it's almost like a Tom & Jerry cartoon!

"Richard Sandall, a well-known Auckland butcher, 56 years of age, met with his death on Friday in a remarkable manner. He was chasing a rat in his shop, and fell from a bench, coming into collision with a meat hook, which struck him under the brow of the right eye. Sandall afterwards fell heavily to the ground, striking his head. Yesterday morning he became delirious, and was taken to the Hospital, where he died half an hour after admission.
WANGANUI HERALD, VOLUME XXV, ISSUE 7518, 14 SEPTEMBER 1891"

I'm astonished they waited until the next morning before taking him to hospital cray

Anyone else got a family member or know someone who met their maker in an odd fashion?

This could turn into an interesting thread.

Regards,

Jay.

My great great grandfather did not much care for his son in law, and upon meeting him on the road, my gg grandfather in a wagon, his son in law on horseback, pulled a pistol on the son in law but the gun didn’t go off, the son in law gave gg grandfather both barrels of a shotgun. Naturally killing him. Odd twist, gg grandmother ultimately moved in with daughter and son in law and died many years later of food poisoning

Wow...feuds in my family tree seem tame now.

Richard Sandall needed a really tough terrier or a really big hunter cat. The rat terrier isn't just a name. The instinct is strong, and these predators don't need to be deprived of food, the instinct is so strong. If they're well fed, they'll rack up their food source animals anyway. Some female cats are huge hunters, for their kittens I guess, but big Toms are astute too. This isn't speculation. A little female cat of mine, now gone, culled the voles out of my yard while harnessed to a tether -- you have to lifeguard this so they don't get hung up. One of my current Maine Coon looking cats learned mousing from a female housemate who spent most of her life going outdoors. He definitely needed to learn the ambush style, since he was a rescue and didn't have a mom. Now he's adept and very thorough.

On my Mothers side either an Uncle or close family friend went to drop the kids off at pool in the outside privy. Apparently he sat down, took out his newspaper and lit his pipe. There was a gas leak and since this was the 1930s it was the more volatile form of gas. The ensuing explosion demolished to the privy and shot the old boy across the road where he was found head first in a hedge with his legs in the air very dead. Apparently Weezell had an aunt who demolished a house in a fairly similar fashion!

Alas , my poor aunt. She was 96 years old, got up one morning and apparently hit the light switch and KABOOM! Propane leak filled the basement and that was it. The house across the street was blown off its foundation along with the doors blown out of there casings. Found pieces of the house a mile away and nothing left but the basement. Sad as my 96 year old uncle (her husband) was burning a brush fire and fell in to it and that was his demise 6 months earlier. God Love their daughter, her comment was "Leave it to mom to one up Dad!".

It's not a family member but here's comedian Bill Burr recounting the true story of a man who committed suicide by going on one of those helicopter tours and jumping out mid flight.
It's pretty funny.

Bill Burr is a nut. He's a smart nut and a funny nut. But and I think he'd be the first to admit it, there is something wrong with that boy. Which is a way of saying he's a really funny dude and with the kind of neurosis he has we're lucky he is funny instead of something else.

Yeah he's definitely wound a little tightly, but you're right the guy is smart as a whip and his comedy is hilarious.

All this restaurant server asked him is "do you wanna cookie", what runs through Bill's head is insane but very, very funny.

I remember you telling me the story and I had to apologize for laughing uncontrollably!

his family certainly screwed him up, which isn't too uncommon. Making it funny is a special talent.
