I just walked in my house from work and there is a really really strange smell inside the house. It almost smells like burning plastic. Anyone else ever experience this/know what it is? I just lit up and smoked a pipe and didnt blow up, so I dont really know what to make of it.

I had a similar experience, turned out to be the gather for my MacBook Pro was too close to an oil space heater I had on by my desk. It burned right thru the cord to the wall, it smelled terrible.

Happened to us too, I accidentally turned on a plate with a plastic thing on it when I was supposed to just turn on the oven. And then I took the dog out for a walk. Needless to say the wife was angry. The whole apartment was filled with toxic smoke.

My roommates left me a note and said they smelled it too. They said they checked the furnace in the basement, none of them cooked anything for dinner, and they couldnt figure out what it was, but they said they werent too worried about it. Honestly, it is kind of annoying because it is f*!$#ing up the aroma of my pipe.

If you just started up your furnace for the season it could be that it smells musty after setting all summer.
I bought a house once that’s previous owner had little kids that liked to play with crayons, well they had dropped some into the heat duct and the first time we ran the furnace the whole house smelled kind of like burning plastic. They didn’t totally melt just got warm enough to soften up and start smelling.
Good luck

Yeah, I would definitely be searching for the source of that before doing anything else today - while the burning plastic aroma may be messing with your pipes, I suspect burning house aroma would be a whole lot worse...

When I smell burning stuff I get nervous. I dont stop looking until I've explained the smell. Too many things that can sit and smolder for hours and hours. Usually I find out its not something on fire making a weird smell, but something that will be on fire in a few hours if you dont fix it.

I am happy to report to everyone that in the wee hours of the morning, I left the house to pick up my biker buddy from the bar. By the time I got back home and walked back in the house, the smell was gone. Totally strange. So signs of anything burning, no signs of anything electrical, all the appliances still work, and I checked the furnace and everything is still running OK. It was a really weird occurence, but everything seems OK now.

I am happy to report the culprit of the funny smell, fellas! Turns out our hot water heater was in the process of taking a dump on us. Great! I suppose it could have been worse

Yeah, it could have blown a hole clean through your roof or flooded your house. Just replaced mine a year ago because it was making wierd noises and It was 20 years old.
