Recently I scored some hard-to-find flake tobacco. I want to keep a couple of ounces to smoke and jar the rest. I have never jarred flake before. Do I stand it on end or lay it flat in the jar? Will the flake fall apart during the aging process? I want to make sure I do this right! Thanks for your help.

I keep the stuff upright in the jar. There is some sagging if it's a loose pack, but I sag a little too!
BTW, keep an open mind about the aging hype. I actually prefer most Virginia flakes before they acquire too much age.

They seem a little brighter and perky to me.

Thanks guys,

I have been using these 8oz jelly jars to store my bulk tobacco:

These smaller jars allow me to open smaller amounts so I can enjoy fresher tobacco.
I recently found these jars:

These 8 oz jars should work great for flake tobacco. The jars are wide enough to lay the flakes flat, if necessary. I will use the narrow 8 oz jars if I decide to store the flakes on end.

I like those little jars. You could take a few flakes out and dry them, cube cut them and then put in those little jars. I'll have to keep a look out for them.

Thanks Roth. I hoped you would answer this thread. I guess I will use the jelly jars (top jar) and stack them as you described. The bottom 8oz jars are nice looking but much more expensive. It will simplify things to use one type of jar for storage. I do use the 4oz jelly jars for gifts. I bought my son a pipe for Christmas and included several of these small jars with samples. It made a nice looking gift.

Anyone actually perform the entire canning process? I am curious how long you submerged tge can during the canning bath? I figured I would do it for about 10 minutes.
