I understand the need to rest a pipe after use to allow time for moisture to evaporate, and I have read the best place to store a pipe is on a rack with the stem pointing upwards. My question is given a day or so to rest, can a pipe then be stored in a semi airtight container?
I am new to pipes, and can definitely smell the pipes when I walk into my office/man cave. I am thinking of drying my pipes in the garage (could get to 100+ degrees F in the summer and 40 degrees in the winter) then storing them in an unused humidor when dry.
Any ideas or experience with this?

Personally I wouldn't store my pipes in such extreme temperatures as a garage. Plus the gas fumes, CO1, various other chemicals are not things I want my pipes to be around.
I have no facts to back up the following statement, but I feel that pipes need to "breathe", which is why we store them out in the open on racks (not closed away in boxes).
I've been a pipe man for 23 years, have over 70 pipes in my collection and I smoke them all. But when I walk into my den, though I can smell the aroma of smoked tobacco, I don't think I've ever smelled my pipes themselves.
So my opinion is to smoke a pipe, put it back on the rack, smoke another. Repeat.

Maybe you are not cleaning them properly, or promptly, after you smoke them. I have had this problem before, though I love the smell, my girl hates it. I find that letting them rest long enough will get rid of any smell they may be putting off. Also, systems are bad for this and the reservoir should be cleaned thoroughly with vodka once in a while.

Uncle Arthur has the right idea. I smoke a system knockoff with an identical well, it seems to be a factory reject. It also has a wooden stem. I smoke it most often, sometimes with less than a days rest, and I have no problem keeping it clean and smelling sweet with very little effort! Just a quick clean after every smoke, cleaning the well just a bit more thoroughly than the bowl; it takes less than a minute to clean it.

The aroma of pipe tobacco and a recently smoked pipe is part of the pleasure. Put some potted plants in your smoking room. They will naturally "refresh" the air for you. Never keep pipes in a garage, in any hot area, or for that matter in any airtight container. Pipes are like your pet dog. They need to be in a people environment. Your pipe collection graces your home. They are a smoking man's best friends.

Keeping a (open) box of baking-soda or a cup filled with activated charcoal in the general vicinity of your pipes will also help to freshen up the air somewhat, without leaving some terrible cloying lavender stink.
