Stinger: What is the design rationale?

What's the idea behind a stinger-type attachment for a stem? What purpose is it designed to serve?

It is meant to cool the smoke by condensing the moisture in the smoke. The idea was that the metal stinger would be cooler than the smoke and thus attract the moisture from the smoke and allow it to collect in the area surrounding the stinger... I for one, see no benefit in a stinger. If you smoke slow and steady you shouldn't have a moisture problem!

A widget designed to attract the attention of those who can't slow down enough to get a nice dry smoke. (in my no way humble opinion)

Have a couple of pipes with them, don't really notice a difference if in or out.

just trouble as far as running a cleaner down goes... but I'm all for the ingenuity of it were it to actually work without the trouble of cleaning goes

Don't like them... Either I cut them, or sell the pipe
