Like the retired Navy Petty Officer Robert Smith of Filto pipes, William Edward Ornsby an English Chief Marine Officer also wanted a lightweight cool smoking pipe and his idea became the Ornsby pipe.
I'm keeping my Walnut bowled Ornsby smokey with some Chenet's Cake.

Isn't that interesting. Looks like a good way to salvage a pretty bowl with a broken shank too. I have metal working tools. Thanks for the idea!

If you want to see how the metal insert is prepared nevadablue just ask it's different than one would expect and it works great.

Yes, please. I would guess that the hole in the briar is threaded and the insert is threaded, but... I don't know.

Actually it's tapered to fit where it enters the bowl then it ends up round at the end where it exits the bowl sort of pinning it in place. It's drilled through but stops short of the exit, the internal shank is filed about an inch to reveal the delivery of smoke from the bowl.
