I've gotten to where I don't get much tongue bite anymore, at least with the tobaccos I've been smoking. But, I do still get a slight tingling sensation on my tongue after every smoke. I wonder if everyone gets this and it's just part of pipe smoking. Or, do experienced smokers not get it at all. Does your tongue feel any different after a smoke?

I typically don't have any after effects on my tongue or anywhere in my mouth. This is provided I'm smoking at a reasonable pace. The only time this is an exception is with a mild or light tasting blend when I intentionally puff more to wring some flavor out of it and feel a bit of something on my tongue when I brush my teeth.

Occasionally I get some tongue-tingle, though it's never very bad, but it is always from VA blends (not all VAs give me tingle-tongue, but every time I do occasionally get it, it's always from a VA).

Tobacco contains number of different chemicals. And whatever is added during the growing season to allow it to grow. You are burning this in a wooden chamber and drawing whatever is coming off that combustion. Now, call me crazy, but unless your mouth and all its parts have been through years of of pipe smoking, I don't see anything wrong with some slight discomfort. After five, ten, twenty years enough part of your mouth would be well abused to notice much other than the taste.

What kind of pipe do you smoke?

Many espouse drying their tobacco crispy before smoking. The only time I’ve experienced tingling tongue discomfort is when I did so.

It’s happened, twice.

Once when I smoked sone bone dry Half n Half from an old pouch and the other when I completely dried some granger in the sun on the dashboard of my car.

In both cases, it was as you describe. A tingly discomfort that ended that immediately.

The odd thing is that with proper moisture, Granger is the gentlest tobacco I’ve ever encountered. Dry it too much and its incompatible with my personal chemistry.

Anyone experience similar?

On edit. In jimInks review of Granger, he suggests adding some moisture to prevent tongue bite. In my case, he’s spot on. Absolutely right.

Like you, I find Granger to be cool smoking and fairly mild. It is one of my picks for long car trips as I can gravity fill and light up with minimal fussing around. Can generally smoke a bowl that way with minimal relights.

I don't think I have ever dried any out and tried it. I might give that a shot sometime to see how it changes.

When I experienced a similar issue I kept to the leaf that worked best for me, and basically slowly kept acclimating my oral tissue to the situation. Gradually I was able to broaden my appreciation of blends, and some of what got me the worst back then are quite enjoyable now.
And one other factor for me, which is not for everyone. I found I really appreciated a P-lip..........
Other stems that are fishtail, need to "fit" my mouth in a manner where the tip is well inside my mouth and not directed at my tongue. More of a factor for me as I prefer to clench more of the time than not.
If you hold your pipe in your hand and sip it, you should be able to manually bypass the issues I mentioned.
