I like to shock the system with some Irish Flake in the morning, then maybe have something lower in nicotine and have Irish Oak in the evening.

I've been pipe smoking for only a few months, still in the learning stage. Being a former cig smoker I like strong high nicotine baccy such as SG's 1792 Flake. It will bite you if you aren't careful. I rub it out and let it dry up for a while before stuffing and lighting. That and slow smoking makes a real difference. Don't worry if you have to relight a lot, that will change with experience, or so I'm told. :)
I do change blends often, sometimes smoking three or four in the same day. I don't think that relates to tongue bite although I do switch to a mild English if I burn myself with the flake or brown rope. I usually use a cob but will stick with my Peterson with the P-lip stem when wounded from smoking to fast or too wet.
So far I don't find it too much of a problem. I think it very useful to let a moist flake or rope dry out a bit to help with keeping it lit and to avoid the steam mentioned earlier in this thread.

I'm mostly a "do one at a time" type puffer. I may change a bit from morning to evening, but the trend is to open a tin and plow through it. Maybe have a couple others open for a small variety. My fondness for Latakia moves me to blends like Vintage Syrian, 3 Oaks Syrian, Balkan Syrian Blend, Black House, you see where this is going. If the better half is with me I will smoke an aro like Celtic Talisman in deference to her sensitive nose.

Hi Juni, I like Irish Oak too. Actually this is the first baccy I smoke in when switching from cigar.
Macnutz, I will find SG's 1972 flak to have a try anyway. Thanks for sharing.

I smoke whatever whenever, mostly just aromatics. Somedays I'm in the mood for a cherry blend and others a vanilla or chocolate blend. All depends on how I feel and what time of day it is. Tongue bite is usually brought on by puffing too hard or too frequently in hopes of keeping the tobacco lit. A lot of times this can be cured with a more regular tamping of the ash.
