I don't know if I change taste too frequently to cause tongue bite. I google and find one passage discussing switch to a new tobacco is one of the reasons for tongue bite. Do you guys stick on one tobacco everyday or change taste as wish? For me, I have almost 10 kinds of tobacco in the home for I am a beginner. I don't know which flavor is my favorite. I try each taste on the mood. And recently I find somewhat tongue bite. Annoying!! Cure?

Tongue bite I think is from puffing to hard, try to slow down. I smoke 3 to 4 diff. tobacco in a day.

I'm trying as many different tobaccos as I can because I am learning what I like best, too. I need to find a couple of favorites in time to stock up for the summer months when I won't have access to a tobacco store.
Some blends may be more prone to cause tongue bite than others, but smoking lots of different blends shouldn't be a problem.

yes baskerville59 mark it lol. you deserve it! And thanks for the formulation. Now i will pay more attention on "dry up your tobacco " issue.
And do you repack baccy or just leave it in the original tin? I remember once read a passage to repack saying a lot of benefits. Is it true?

Baskerville, perhaps you have a tongue of wood! My hands can endure more heat that most people. It may be technique or you may be tougher than most.

I have several blends that I love, and keep in my rotation, but I'm also trying new stuff all the time, and it's nothing to have at least a half dozen tins open here to choose from. I don't really have too much of a problem with tongue bite, but I do sip my pipes, and try to let my tobacco dry before smoking it.

I've settled into the groove of something light and undemanding in the morning (aromatics usually) and in the evening I pack in the deep thoughtful blends. I only get about two smokes per day due to the large amount of time spent at work indoors. So I have to make em count!

I keep 3 or 4 tobaccos in rotation, though at times I get hung up on something I really like and smoke it exclusively til it's gone. I find that a pale ale works as a good aperitif between different blends. Currently I have a tin of Erinmore mixture open, and bulk Goedewaagen, and an open bag of McClellands Townsman Cavendish Maple. Forgot to bring out a Balkan this time, as I am offshore on the rig. No ale either, lol. Three weeks of abstinence makes the homecoming all that much better.

I smoke two to three different blends a day..I also agree on slowing down on the draw to help with tongue bite. :)

In the mornings a Cavendish, them I move to a Latakia for the day ending in the evening with a flavored aromatic. I switch up my blends but this is just about my day. As for bite, when I am worried I draw harder and faster getting a bite, and just slow down. Anything will bite if you are too fast or too deep.

Sometimes i'll smoke nothing but one blend for a week. And then I'll be tasting a little of everything I got.
I usually get tongue bite when I'm out drinking with friends and get enough in me to forget to slow the puffin' down.
But I don't feel it til the morning. HELLO LEATHER TONGUE! I'm sure more than one have found themselves in my situation. Good times though, but no smoking for the next day. :crying:

I tend to switch it up every day, with the only "every day" blends being Carter Hall and Old Joe Krantz (if nothing else, there are too many great Englishes out there to just pick one). One of the reasons I like smoking a pipe is the great variety of tobaccos out there, so it would seem a shame to stick with one or two throughout the day. If I absolutely had to, I could probably trim my rotation to 5 or 10 blends (shudder) but why do so when there's no need? I've never noticed tongue bite having anything to do with rotating blends, but of course the more blends you sample the more likely you are to encounter those that bite!

Causes for tongue bite have been covered pretty well so I'll just add that I also smoke several different blends each day. No rhyme or reason to which ones, simply the variety of it all makes me happy (-:

And do you repack baccy or just leave it in the original tin?
I am a low income pipe smoker, so i only have 3 tins in a rotation at a time. Because of this I go threw a tin relatively quickly and leave the baccy in there. One day when I have 10 or so open at a time, I will transfer to mason jars to keep a better seal on them as they will be open longer.
It varies by mood if I have one baccy per day or two or all three of my open tins.

All you guys talk about slow puff is the cure for tongue bite. But if for flake, it's hard to keep it lit, how to smoke slow? Mission impossible for a beginner like me. I am keep scratching the match box! Gosh, really a job to dampen my enjoyment of the baccy!
But I like Dunhill flakes. It's awesome. Even a beginner like me can tell the difference. But due to my very limited experiences, chopped baccy is easy to keep lit and appropriate for the newbie.

Flake is one that just takes practice daji.

This is a good Step by Step on how to fill a pipe with tobacco.
And it does take some practice but it's worth it.
To what is shown on the Mac Barens site I'll add what works for me.

Fold the amount of flake you've determined will loosely fill your bowl.

Before you actually put it in the bowl tear off a 1/4 inch or so from one end.

Stuff what remains into your bowl.

The bit you tore off, rub it out and add to the top of the bowl. This will act as tinder.
Remember that flake tobacco is compacted and will swell as it heats and burns. So the plug you form when you fold the flake should slide into the tobacco chamber snugly but also easily.
Everything else holds true with flake tobacco. Smoke slow, tamp often but lightly and damn sure enjoy!

I am pretty much sticking to PA right now, unless I eyeball one of my aromatics and decide that'll taste good today. And I'm fairly new to this as well, only been smoking a little over 2 months. I still get tounge bite, but I find that the more I smoke, the more I figure out how to avoid it. So it all comes with practice. And like everyone is saying, smoke slowly. When you figure out how to pack the pipe, the lighting will become easier. Most importantly though, enjoy it, when you get frustrated, it turns into a bad smoking session.

OTD, thanks so much for the link. I do watch videos on how to pack a flake several times back and forth.

I suppose as you and the others said just practice and I will work it out sooner or later.
I do use the cut-off baccy as tinder. I think it off by myself and I am proud of it. LOL.
I suppose maybe next time I will insert less. I will try.
Hello dongreyface, I will try enjoying the flakes while suffering small hiccups at the same time.
