Here is my much delayed impressions from my first 9 oz of Virginia Gold Vanilla made by STG. This is not a formal review (which is why it's in the Discussion section and not the Review section).
A little background first: This is the big bag of tobacco that is hanging on the wall in Rite Aide, at least here in New York, anyway. Rite Aide seems to have phased out their old OTC bulk blend (made by Dreamcastle) and has introduced this instead. The old stuff was heavily sauced. It would com out of the bag practically dripping. My father began to smoke it when the price of Captain Black White went up and up and up. He thought it tasted similar. I disagreed. Now Rite Aide carries this blend called Virginia Gold. I think it is superior to the other one. My father disagrees. So it goes.
The first thing I noticed with the Virginia Gold Vanilla was the moisture content. It was smokeable and that was very odd to me. You figure that any OTC aromatic would have to sit out for 6 months before you could smoke it but this stuff is ready to go.
The vanilla blend smells like vanilla, which is what you would expect. It's not overpowering but it is pronounced.
It can burn a little quick when you get it going but I haven't been burned yet. I will say, though, that I don't think I have been burned by anything so my body chemistry might be resistant. Quick puff at your own risk.
I've gotten compliments on the room note so that is a plus if you're looking for a crowd pleaser blend.
The flavor is not anything that to write home about. I would equate it to CBW on the bland scale but it does have flashes of vanilla, virginia and chemical (listed in the order of abundance). The chemical taste is usually a here and gone experience but if you are overly sensitive about how your tobacco tastes, then this blend isn't for you.
In conclusion, I would say that you like Captain Black White, try Virginia Gold Vanilla. It is a lot cheaper that the Captain and I think it is more satisfying in the nicotine department. Here is New York, it's about $17 for a 9 oz bag vs the $10 you pay for 1.5 oz or $60 for 12 oz.
Also, there is a Black and Gold blend that is 'whisky' flavored, a cherry and a black cavendish.
I'm not receiving any remuneration for this but rather I thought that I would share this experience for those who might be on a budget.
My apologies to roth for taking so long in getting this up. I've been promising this for a while but life got in the way.
I'll field any questions anyone has the best I can but, suffice to say, when I smoke an aromatic vanilla, I smoke this. The price is unbeatable.

Haha, thanks roth. I just took a vacation (my boss told me, 'Go now or don't go,' so I had to go) to beautiful Charleston, SC to visit some friends. I was so exhausted, I could not post anything while I was down there. Then I came back and was playing catch up.
I didn't imagine you were waiting with baited breath to hear my half-assed opinions on a new OTC aromatic but I felt bad because I said I would do it and then I was late about doing it.
I hope something here was helpful.

Great post reichenbach. Not all of us can afford or have access to more expensive blends. I for one still smoke my share of OTC blends not just for cost, I happen to like some of them...
