I received this in my email today:

Dear Partner,

We are happy to inform you that Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) has completed the acquisition of Mac Baren Tobacco Company (MBTC) as of July 1st, 2024.

We are excited about this acquisition as the combined business of STG and MBTC will drive a world leading pipe tobacco portfolio and a strong FineCut position in especially Scandinavia, Germany, and selected export markets. On top we add the nicotine pouch brands Ace and Gritt from Ministry of Snus to the STG portfolio of XQS, Ström and !act.

Combine this with STG’ leading global position in cigars and we have a strong cross category portfolio that will allow us to serve not only our consumers an attractive range of cigars, pipe tobacco, FineCut and nicotine pouches but also serve you as our customer. We look forward to building a stronger partnership delivering more value to you as a customer in the future.

The completion of the transaction effectively means that STG and MBTC officially is one company. We will, however, continue to run the business separately until further notice. Specifically, this means that you will have the same sales professional and that you can place orders the same way you are used to. It is our priority to ensure you will receive the same level of quality and service.

Our goal is to make this a seamless transition for our customers, and we will continue to do our best in delivering on our commitments. We will continue to keep you posted on developments relevant for you as a customer. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact your sales professional with any questions you may have.

We look forward to continuing to serve your needs.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Jeremy McKenna

Guess we'll see how long it goes on before STG decides MacBaren and Sutliff need "improving"...

Our fellow forum members in Virginia should contact their Congressional delegation (contacting state legislators would be wise, too) and voice concerns about anti-competitive consolidation and, much more importantly, the potential for job losses, tax revenue losses, and follow-on harm to the local economy in Richmond.

Such constituent outcry will not undo the acquisition, but they may lead to pressure on STG to make concessions that keep Sutliff much as it is.

The current political environment, especially in a presidential election year, is much more favorable to us than it has been. This is not because politicians are falling back in love with tobacco. It is for the reason that onshoring and American ownership of businesses is now much more in vogue in both parties of our political duopoly.
