SRV died 24 years ago today. We saw him play with Jeff Beck supporting the "In Step" album in 1989. Just a few years ago, I found this picture in a stack of books when we were moving. It now hangs in our pool-table room. A sad reminder of what might have been.

Al,

I have everything SRV did. I was heavily influenced by his music in the mid 80's. I literally pulled my car to the side of the road when I heard the news about his death.

Part of that tour came through Atlanta GA at the time and I put off going thinking there would be a next time..
RIP Stevie!

Stevie Ray was one of the 2 reasons I picked up a guitar in high school (Randy Rhoads was the other).
I never got to see SRV perform, which I regret - the second ACL show and the El Mocambo video still give me chills...

I was in The Marine Corps serving in Desert Storm and one morning I picked up Stars and Stripes and SRV's death was on the cover. I still have that paper somewhere. I just thought his guitar play was fantastic and I loved his voice.

My favorite guitar is a Telecaster I have but I have bought many a strat just because of SRV!
Sad day for music and one of Texas's brightest stars!!!

Great thread. SRV is one of my probably top 3 favorite artists of all time. I LOVE the blues and there are very few who could bend those strat strings and fill them with so much soul and feeling. The fact that he was a vanilla face is also pretty cool, as the blues originated and was dominated by African Americans mostly up until that time (excluding the British rock n' roll artists that were heavily influenced by the blues). The El Mocambo recording is absolutely mind blowing, especially when he plays "Lenny" and forgets he has the cig in his mouth and burns that thing almost to his lips, lol. SRV's rendition of "Little Wing" is my stranded on a deserted island song and is 7 minutes of soulful guitar heaven. "Blues at Sunrise" with Albert King is also a ridiculously great track.
RIP STEVIE, gone but most definitely not forgotten!

"The Sky is Crying" and "Texas Flood" are among my favorites. That's why I thought this pic of Austin's flash flood last Oct was so appropriate:

Jason, I was in Augusta then and thought the same thing, they'll be by again. The 3 hour drive to Atlanta just seemed like too far. We make some sad decisions in this world...

JReb, +1 on both of those tunes, they would be in my top five or ten from SRV as he had so many awesome ones. "Riviera Paradise", "Lenny", "Couldn't Stand the Weather", "Tightrope", "Tin Pan Alley".....jeez i could go on and on and on, lol...

I posted that tune just a week ago ... I always pay tribute this time of year.

I saw him in Cedar Rapids, IA on 18 April 1990 shortly before his accident.

Guitar Hurricane is my all time favorite but his version of Little Wing still blows the top of my head off every time. The amount of emotion he was able to portray through his phrasing on that rendition is truly amazing.

My only regret is my buddy, who took us to the show rented a limo for us and the 1.5 hour drive to DC. I remember the drive, but sadly very little of the show....(stumbled onto that picture a few years back, which I have no recollection of buying).

I was named after Stevie Ray Vaughan. I'll always remember my Dad telling me that he heard the news on the radio and had to pull off the side of the road, I was in the car seat, I was 4 months old. Needless to say, I grew up on his music and he is my favorite blues player. I only wish that I could have had the chance to see him perform live.
