I started off smoking a pipe several months ago. I took it slow at first and started with a Dr. Grabow and a bag of Super Value Rum pipe tobacco. Gotta say that tobacco was horrid and i didnt much care for it. I have found the aromatics that i enjoy smoking but my curious and adventurous mind is telling me to step outside and see what else is out there.
I have an order ready to buy when i get paid which includes:
C&D haunted bookshop
Mac baren HH Pure Virginia
SPC Plum Pudding
Escudo Navy De Luxe
Briar Works Back Down South
C&D Bayou Morning
And a few aromatics that i like and or want to try out.
Really wanted some Davidoff Flake Medallion but its on back order. ?
Anywho that look like a good place to start? I went off a few recommendations from both mutton chop pipper and Alan from the old carolina pipe cottage.

I would say, since they're on sale, to add a tin of Warped The Red Hunt, and then - HH Old Dark Fired, and for a nice change of pace in aromatics, Sillem's Linea Epoque Antique. I am a sucker for easy smoking, good tasting aro's during the summer, and that Sillem's one has been my favorite find of 2022. (***Edited as only the Warped tins are on sale out of what I recommended)

Your list looks good though for branching out. Cant go wrong with any of those, but I was not a huge fan of the HH Virginia, which is why I recommended the Dark Fired.

Seems like you have a lot of family’s covered there especially Vapers you might want to try a pure Burley or straight up English (guess Plum Pudding is considered more of a Balkan)

Perhaps more experienced pipers could offer input on some of those.

Though something Like Bayou Night is considered an English (in that Family ) they say it’s Scottish and it is very distinctI’ve against a lot of more heavy Latakia blends.

I would definitely recommend Petersons early morning pipe if you are coming from aromatics and want to try some Latakia. And if you like the perique you get from all those Vapers you are ordering and want more Latakia and Nic try Petersons NightCap. Both seem to be staples for good reason.

enjoy the journey. I’ve tried like 50 blends and I’m starting to get an understanding of what I like and don’t like, 50 is nothing compared to a lot of the experienced pipers here, I’ll keep an eye on this thread for sure…

Sounds like you may still be a bit new for aromatics. I would avoid Virginias for a bit and stick with English and Burley blends for a while and then branch out.
Thanks. Always value your input. I figured virginias would be a good place then English blends. I know this is a personal journey and everyone has different tastes. I will probably play around with my cart this week before i make my final purchase.

@Amarkey a lot of people have a misunderstanding of what is an Aromatic, and what should it constitute.

It use to be, when mentioned, Aromatic conjured up notions of sweet and goopy, cherry tasting tabac, etc, something that had to be sweet and fill the room with a nice smell.

This is a great article if you haven’t seen it.

Read my above reply, and maybe Chasing was just simply placing typical Aros under this category, as many fall under.

Aromatics aren’t all goopy wet sweet...

Check out Samuel Gawith Grousemoor as an example of a blend that is considered an Aromatic, but has a lot of typical VA profiles going on.

This is a blend, that doesn’t differ much in the taste department when compared to the likes of some Esoterica blends, but I’m assuming, by the way it was simply prepared, it’s classified as an Aro, but when you smoke it, compared to many Esoterica, you wouldn’t know the difference between which is the Aro, and which isn’t.

You’ll hear a lot of talk about those smoking Aros, that didn like them, because they want to smoke tabac that tastes like tabac, as if all Aros are like this, that is not true.

A lot of Aros have very strong tabac profiles, it’s just that, for whatever reason(s), most people seem to think all Aros will taste a certain way, how they are topped, with whatever they are topped with, and they won’t taste like real tabac.

Yeah with VA‘s definitely a learning curve with technique VA’s burn hot as hell if I had a bit more Native in me friends on the rez would call me chief swollen tongue instead of just halfbreed piper

A burn is heat induced, what you are experiencing is Tongue Bite, which is not a heat causing burn, but the PH balance of VAs, that cause this chemical reaction.

When in doubt, just dry VA blends really crispy, or fairly crisp, don’t pack tight, and sip slowly when smoking, and you’ll be right. ;)

I just know Chasing smokes like chocolate and mint Aros, so they might be more the sweet typical Aro people associate with.

Oh, and when it comes to ph chemical Tongue Bite, you might do everything right, and still get irritated, which you could be sensitive is all. Some people can’t do VAs...
