Just got this Stanwell Golden Contrast 29 by Tom Eltang -Estate Pipe- Made in Denmark. From what little I know, it is possible/probable that Mr. Eltang laid his hands on this one. Wood seems above average.

The Golden Contrasts are a great line of Stanwell pipes. It is unlikely Tom Eltang actually made your pipe or touched it. The GC finish was developed by Tom and he used it on his own handmade pipes after he went on his own. I read somewhere he stopped using the finish recently because he became allergic to one of the chemicals used in the process. It is a spectacular finish that really highlights the grain well, and you got a very good price on that one. Hope she smokes as good as she looks! Here are some of his handmades with the finish:

Can't wait to get the pipe, and this is why I am stating that it is possible/probable that he actually finished my pipe. The finish is incredible based on the pictures, which I cannot post.

It's hard to determine the age of a pipe sometimes, but this Stanwell has a lovely Golden Contrast stain, which might help me narrow down the date. You see, Tom Eltang selected some Stanwell pipes worthy of the finish, and finished them until 1995. Looking at the quality of this piece, it's possible that Tom completed this gem!

I am hoping that Mr. Davidson is correct, as the pipe in the link looks exactly like my pipe.

I see the bowl is out of round, the seller says the stem has tooth marks. Estate pipes always seem to have a little something of character/use.

This looks like it will be something you would smoke regularly, with pleasure.

You will pay that much for a plateaux pre drilled pipe kit/block.

Nice bag!

I think Stanwell has hired famous pipe carvers to design pipes for them over the years, with good success. I recently bought a brushed brown Stanwell pot from P&C for $49.95 (or thereabouts). The shape 86 was originally designed by Sixten Iversson, though of course, my little pipe is just a factory pipe legacy of his good work shared among the pipe smoking masses like me. But I get great pleasure knowing the design is from one of the greats. Equally to the point, it is a marvelous piece of industrial design -- compact, graceful, strikingly utilitarian and still intensely handsome. The masters hand still prevails.
