South African Pipe Tobacco Blends

My other post from yesterday about Springbok Tobacco in the cloth pouch sparked memories of other South African blends that I have tried.

Rum and Maple was the most agreeable although I seem to remember it had more propylene glycol presence than I like (which is none). The dark and oily Assegai Export was frightening. Jock was okay, but I only had a pack once and the memory is vague. Anybody else ever try one of these?

I’ve had Jock several times in the 1990’s from memory it was decent tobacco. If I could find some in the States I’d give it a whirl again.

Never tried any of those but a forum member sent me a bunch of samples from a B&M in SA called Wesleys and let me tell you, those blends are amazing.

I have a 27+ year old tin of Rum & Maple in the cellar somewhere. I may have to dig it out.

In the trivia for-what-it’s-worth department, Rum & Maple was the habitual favourite blend of Stephen Gilroy, one of the pioneer founders of South Africa’s craft beer and microbrewery sector. And also a prodigious pipe smoker. And an entertaining bon vivant to boot. One hell of an excellent brewer. He used to say that the reason you would see old men drinking good beer and smoking their pipes in villages across the land, is because they got to be old men by spending most of their lives drinking good beer and smoking their pipes!
