I picked up a slightly used Peterson Shannon 03 and the only issue I'm having is a sour smell/taste on the stem which is vulcanite. What's the best way to rid of this?
My first thought is to ask is it in the stem or on the stem?
If in the stem a good clean out with Everclear (if you can get it or high proof gin/vodka/rum) on a brush or bristle pipe cleaners followed by the same in soft cleaners until they come out clean. And of course do that with the bowl also.
Hope that helps
Man I dont know. Doing too much to the stems can really mess them up. Discoloration, warping, etc. If your not too fond of it maybe carefully place it in some boiling water. Not too long to melt or warp it but maybe flash it a little? Id still use a pipe retort on it.
Good luck man!
Sounds a lot like oxidization, I always use obsidian oil inside and outside my stems to prevent this... to remove it, I always use sandpaper with grits from 600 to 3,000.
