So I ordered some soapstone the other day to try my hand at carving it. Just something to do as the temperature keeps dropping and I'm suck inside. So I got to thinking what not try to carve a pipe from it. Has anyone ever owned a soapstone tobacco pipe? It seems most online are made for smoking other things. Just wondering if anybody had ever actually smoked tobacco from a soapstone pipe.

I had a nice chunk left over from 10th Grade art class that I tried to work into a pipe a year or so ago. Using only files, it was not easy to make a bowl or mortise, and so I ended up giving up after a few significant chips popped off. I'm still intrigued by the idea, but I haven't found a good source for soapstone, and I've heard shipping is quite expensive, so it's been placed further down on the list for me.

I have not smoked from soapstone, or pipestone for that matter, however there are archeological artifacts that indicate Native Americans were using both of these materials for tobacco pipes.

I have the shank from an old estate corn cob and and bowl is burnt out, think I'm going to make make a replacement bowl for it out of soapstone just for the fun of it
