I have been a cigarette smoker for 16 years and have always wanted to smoke a pipe... So long story short I started pipe smoking for my 29th bday back in august although i still smoke cigarettes... I have tried a lot of the "classic" tobaccos (PA, H&H, Cap'n Black, etc, etc) and a few other blends from local tobacco shops.... I have figured out I like a tobacco I can inhale from time to time from the pipe and it doesnt kill your lungs but at the same time isnt to light... I have found Capn black white is ok and I just got a sample of Molto Dolce and I really enjoy that... I was also recommended a black cavandish called "Midnight Smoke" and it smelled great but the flavor was so light it was like smoking air.... Can someone give me a few blends to try that I might enjoy that wont kill my lungs but isnt so light it taste's like air.

Welcome Mrgoodtime!

Many of us have made the conversion, and many still smoke cigarettes as well.

I'm one of the former.

One tobacco that is easy on the wallet, and the lungs is Lane 1Q.

It goes by many names, generally if you ask your Tobacconist which "bulk" blend is Lane 1Q they'll will let you know.

You can also find it easily on line.

A listing of the site sponsors are located in the left column.

Just scroll down a little, they are all very reputable.

Also; if you want to do a little reading to truly discover what is available Luxury Tobacco Reviews will be of tremendous help.

Again on the left side near the top, just below the sign in boxes you can search by tobacco types.

I hope that helps.

Again we're glad to have you aboard.

Don't be shy dive right in.
Edit: I might add that pipes are primarily for puffing, and not really a nicotine delivery system like cigarettes.

However; there are some blends that have a strong nicotine component G.L. Pease Haddo's Delight being one that comes immediately to mind.

I've never been a cigarette smoker and am too new to pipe tobacco to give any advice there.
I'll just say welcome to the forum (and don't inhale).

Greetings, welcome to a great forum.
I took up the pipe five months ago, partly to reduce my dependency on cigarettes. I have entirely given up the cigs and it has not be a difficult thing, much different than quitting cold turkey. I got no jones on my bones this time.
I don't normally inhale but sometimes do it by accident or habit. You do not have to inhale to get the nic in yer blood but it does take longer when it is taken up through the big veins under the tongue. There is a sticky above the recent posts on the front page of the forum, entitled "Tobacco Basics - Nicotine & Sugar Content - Curing Methods". It is well worth a read and will answer some of your questions regarding nicotine content of different tobaccos.
I find many English/Balkan blends can be inhaled without pain, Virginia flakes, not so much. Burley has a good nic hit.
Once I determined that the pipe would be my one source of nicotine it was easy for me to drop the cigs all together. I smoke a lot, especially for a new piper. But, I've lost my morning cough and have gained no weight.

I don't inhale my pipe, so I don't know how lung harshness would be, but if youre looking for something of an aromatic blend, the 7 Seas Line of tobaccos by MacBaren are top notch and I know a lot of people on the forum smoke them. I am partial to the Royal, but I have heard that the Red and the Black are very good also. I also like Vanilla Custard by Altadis, which can be found in bulk for very cheap and when properly dried is a very good smoke. Hope this helps. Cheers and welcome to the forums!

The first thing I want to comment on is that pipe smoking is *primarily* about the taste buds, not the nicotine hit. (Unlike a lot of the guys here, I have never been a cigarette smoker - been a pipe and cigar smoker for over 40 years. That certainly colors my perspective.)

I started with drugstore aros - smoked a ton of Borkum Riff, back when all they had was the black. Then I discovered the Dutch cavendishes - Troost and Sail Yellow - which opened up the world of non-flavored tobaccos. Then I discovered latakia. Only in the past 7 or 8 years have I discovered Virginia blends.
The point of this - pipe smoking is a journey. Try a lot of different things. Find a good tobacco review site - I strongly recommend tobaccoreviews.com - and spend some time there. Find one or more reviewers who enjoy some of the blends you do, and try things they like. Full enjoyment of the pipe takes time - it's not a quick hit thing!

And welcome aboard! :puffy:

+1 on the Brown Bogie flyfishn.

As smooth and mellow as that one is to inhale the nicotine content is surprising.
And while flavor is the primary benefit of a pipe over a cigarette or a cigar, for me, the nicotine is what tobacco consumption is all about.

I might add that pipes are primarily for puffing, and not really a nicotine delivery system like cigarettes.

Lawrence, I really don't understand this stance.

Very true that as a nicotine delivery system cigarettes are the most efficient. But many times I see it posited on this forum, others as well actually, that the pipe is for flavor, nicotine being very secondary.

I only single you out just now because you make efforts at discussion rather than dismissal.
I could well be misunderstanding the opinions presented, wouldn't be a first for me, but statements such as yours and others make me feel as though there exists a mindset that to smoke a pipe as a means of getting nicotine is somehow wrong, misguided.
Historically as best I can tell the use of tobacco in a pipe has been pretty much the same experience as what it is for me today. The rituals involved in the preparation and the resultant act of smoking are palliative in their own fashion but the Lady Nicotine has always been the primary harbinger of peace and surcease from the troubles of the day. I've no doubt that the voyageurs of the north, sailors before the mast or shepherds in the field waxed contemplative and poetic while enjoying their pipes as a result of the break it afforded them from their trials.

But I also have no doubt that the weed they took part of had a good dose of nicotine and if it hadn't they prolly wouldn't have bothered with the thing in the first place.
Or am I simply reading something into such comments that isn't really there (-;

Thanks for all the advice guys and it looks like this has been great discussion so far. So far I have stayed away from english tobaccos as I have read they are harsher. As far as not suppose to inhale.. I know but at the same time my grandfather smoked a aristocob pipe packed with Velvet til the day he died and just like him I dont inhale every puff just a few here and there. I dont draw off a pipe like a cigarette either I am a puffer. Just like many others I also enjoy the flavor on the tobacco on my palette if i didnt I would just stick to cigarettes only. Again I want to say thank you for all the welcomes and advice.
